Best Snowboards 2017-2018

This year's best snowboards, reviewed by the Whitelines Team

UPDATE: Check out our review of the Best 2018/2019 Snowboards here

If you’re here because you’re in the market for a new snowboard – congratulations! Without wanting to come across like the folk who pitch a tent in their trousers whenever they peel the plastic off a new iPhone, getting your hands on a brand new stick is bloody brilliant.

“Choosing a new snowboard is the most excited a lot of us will ever get without actually doing any snowboarding”

Tearing off the wrapper, mounting your bindings for the first time, and enjoying that new-board smell; choosing a new snowboard is the most excited a lot of us will ever get without actually doing any snowboarding…

While it can be a lot of fun, it’s also fraught with peril. Get a stick that’s not right for you, and you’ll be cursing yourself for ever letting that funky graphic/pro endorsement/catalogue waffle sway you into picking up something that’s not quite your speed. It’s easily avoidable though, provided you do a little homework.

Before even looking at what’s new in 2017/18, it’s a good idea to brush up on a few rules of thumb. Our video explainers can help in that regard, so if you’re still not sure then be sure to check out the following:

How To Choose A Snowboard

How To Choose A Snowboard, Boots & Bindings Combo

Snowboard Shapes Explained

Do You Need A Wide Snowboard?

So what does the list of snowboards available in 2017/18 tell us? Among other things, it has dispelled any notion of the weird-shapes “trend”. With more available than ever, and their popularity showing no signs of abetting, it’s clear those things are here to stay.

It’s not all about the oddballs, though; conventional fare is in bountiful supply, and certain modern classics continue to truck on. All in all, there’s truly something for everyone – you just have to keep looking until you find it.

Spoilt for choice, we mobilised the Whitelines Test Team – now bigger and better than ever before – and hit up every event we could. All told we covered over 200 decks in our quest for the best (as well as several bindings and goggles too).

Every snowboard we feature in our gear guide is accompanied by a full, in-depth review from an experienced rider – and if you’re wondering which ones they thought were the very best, check out what made the cut for this year’s Whitelines 100.

Of course, it’s impossible to test everything on the market, but this list is definitely the best place to start. Get the kettle on, and start looking for your new steed.

Rocker profiles make a lot of sense in kids boards, as getting the most out of a cambered stick can be difficult at a young age.

The Head Evil Youth provides a mellow platform for low-consequence learning, and opens the door to beginner freestyle too.

It’s not just for newcomers; our experienced, hard charging grom testers loved it too.

We’re not sure anyone takes as scientific an approach to snowboard design as Head do. Every design decision can be explained in great detail, with wooly brand-speak in mercifully short supply.

The KERS system found in this board is no gimmick; for a truly reactive stick that’s powerful yet impossibly light, this Instinct is one worth following.

It’s not short of tech, but retains a predictable feel that is perfect for lapping the park and dialling in the tricks.

Those looking for a new freestyle board in 2017/18 need to be checking out the Huck Knife.

Salomon Pulse Snowboard 2017-2018

Overhauled for 2017/18, Salomon’s long-serving beginner’s board now features a camber-esque profile as opposed to the flat base of previous years.

It’s soft enough that even the most apprehensive newcomer can learn to manipulate it without much difficulty, and the slightly directional shape means you’ll be cruising in no time.

Salomon Rumble Fish Women’s Snowboard 2017-2018

If you like the look of the Gypsy but want something a bit more agressive, the Salomon Rumble Fish is the answer.

Carbon additives improve the end-to-end pop as well as the edge-to-edge response, so you can really push yourself on this one and it won’t let you down.

Despite its true twin shape, our testers were quick to praise its all-mountain performance.

Salomon Sick Stick Snowboard 2017-2018

The name’s been around for a while, but the newest incarnation of the Salomon Sick Stick isn’t like any you’ve seen before.

Wolle Nyvelt has fully overhauled it as part of his new ‘Hillside Project’, and we’re happy to report that what was already an excellent board is now even better.

Salomon Sleep Walker Snowboard 2017-2018

A new one for 2017/18, the Salomon Sleep Walker is essentially a softer, more affordable take on the Villain.

It shares the same shape and profile, but underneath lies a simpler construction that’s good for the wallet and even better for the progressing rider that needs something reliable.

It’d also work nicely as a fun resort board for the more experienced rider.

Salomon Ultimate Ride Snowboard 2017-2018

Bode Merrill’s weapon of choice returns for its second season, and it’s lost none of what made it have such an impact last winter.

You can take this everywhere thanks to its all-mountain build, but ideally it’ll be somewhere gnarly.

Superpipes, monster park jumps and steep pow faces are this board’s happy places; beginners need not apply.

Salomon Villain Snowboard 2017-2018

The Villain has been refined again, once again under the watchful eye of Louif Paradis.

Street-dwellers couldn’t ask for a better setup, but even if you stick the resorts you can’t help but appreciate its tough-yet-lively construction and blunted-twin shape.

The mellow flex makes it accessible for all kinds of rider, and appropriate to all styles of riding. A cast-iron classic, now better than ever.

SIMS Tom Sims Pro Snowboard 2017-2018

Hand-made in the US of A, this posthumous pro model for one of the all-time greats is built for just the kind of hard-charging, low-carving mountain assaults that made Tom Sims’ name.

The shape, sidecut and construction are ideal for slicing up a fresh groomer, but it’s just as good in the powder – and you don’t even have to poach a chairlift.

Vimana Clone Snowboard 2017-2018

The Vimana Clone is a serious snowboard that is best suited to accomplished riders. Carbon and Kevlar both sit within the core, and the sidecut can grip a piste like crazy.

With each size a tribute to a legendary Scanadanavian rider, it doubles as a nice doff of the cap too.

Vimana Continental Twin Snowboard 2017-2018

Available in both rockered and cambered versions, the Vimana Continental Twin is an honest-to-goodness park destroyer that our testers thoroughly enjoyed riding.

It’s well-built and refreshingly free of gimmicks, doesn’t cost the earth, and we’re big fans of the monochrome design too.

The Vimana Continental Twin is definitely one of our favourites for 2017/18.

WEST La Hache Snowboard 2017-2018

Meaty by name, meaty by nature; this all-mountain snowboard from West is fairly stiff, cas end-to-end carbon stringers, and an upgraded base that can really charge.

La Hache doesn’t exclude less confident riders, though, and would make a great one-board solution for anyone getting to ride for a whole winter.

YES Basic Snowboard 2017-2018

Don’t let the name fool you; this board has won high acclaim from riders who’d normally go for something far techier – not to mention pricier.

‘Underbite’ edges make turns on the Basic an absolute joy, and it’s great for freestyle too. No matter what your quiver is looking like, there’s always room for a YES Basic in anyone’s board bag.

YES Emoticon Women’s Snowboard 2017-2018

The Emoticon takes the much-loved Basic and gives it a female-friendly twist.

Shorter, lighter riders will appreciate its narrower waist and softer flex, both of which allow the ‘Underbite’ edge design to really take hold.

The price and characteristics may suggest that the Emoticon is entry-level – and beginniers will indeed love it – but in reality it has a lot to offer more seasoned shredders too.

YES FunINC Kid’s Snowboard 2017-2018

Here’s all the goodness of YES’ know-how, boiled down into a kid-friendly stick.

The mellow rocker profile is an aid to learning, and also makes it easier to stay afloat in deeper snow.

It also looks more like a ‘grown-up’ board, which some groms definitely prefer over more cartoonish designs.

YES Standard Snowboard 2017-2018

Despite its true twin shape, you’re more likely to find a YES Standard in the pow than in the park.

Its M.O. is taming natural features out of bounds, with a stiff enough flex to really ping.

It’s narrower between the feet for quicker edge changes, so if it hasn’t dumped for a while you’ll still enjoy razzing this around the pistes.
