Comfortably the longest-serving kids board of all time, the Burton Chopper has been bringing the next generation along since before today’s top contest groms had even done their first falling leaf. It’s moved with the times, however, morphing from a downsized version of an adult board to something with a true kids-specific design.

“you get more control than a rocker board with less of the twitchiness that camber can sometimes lead to”

The Burton Chopper has a flat profile, which rises up a little as you near the nose and tail. There’s a lot to be said for applying this to a kids’ board, as you get more control than a rocker board with less of the twitchiness that camber can sometimes lead to. Thanks to the biax fibreglass, the board can still be easily manipulated through the waist to engage the edge in turns.

The Chopper also has a slightly convex base, much like the Burton Ripcord and Burton Genie in the men’s and women’s lines respectively. This further reduces the risk of a nasty hang-up when attempting to turn the snowboard, and it’ll come in handy when they move to the boxes in the park too.

With a size range that goes from 80cm up to 130cm, kids of all ages can find one that’ll work for them until they’re ready to step up to the ‘Smalls’ versions of classic Burton decks. This year there’s also a limited edition Chopper with DC Comics tie-in graphics, and which kid wouldn’t want a deck with a Bat-signal on the base base?

Tester’s Verdict

Punki – Whitelines Grom Team

“I couldn’t hold an edge on this, it was too wobbly. It wasn’t like my old Burton Chopper – this felt really bendy.”

Dad’s Comments

“I initially dismissed my kids moaning about this, telling them to shut up because it was exactly the same as their old board… until I flexed it. It’s a super soft deck that would be perfect for a beginner, but was way too noodly for a kid who wants to charge around the mountain.

It felt like Burton have really softened the Chopper up, perhaps to make room for the Process Smalls and Custom Smalls at the stiffer end of the board spectrum? If you’ve owned a Chopper in the past, that’s something to be aware of.”
