The Salomon Huck Knife made its debut in the 2016/17 season, and immediately found a home in the hearts of fun-loving freestyle fiends who like their money to go far. It’s no surprise then that the only significant changes that have been made for its latest incarnation are cosmetic ones.

“The Huck Knife is best ridden where there be jumps and rails”

Salomon had help in crafting the Huck Knife from the brothers Hans and Nils Mindnich. The brothers know their way around a pow field, but the park was these Vermonters’ first and best love. As a result, the Huck Knife is best ridden where there be jumps and rails.

The outline is a good place to start. Being a little on the blunt side, the Salomon Huck Knife has minimal swing weight so will spin like a top. The ‘Quad Camber’ profile features varying levels of bend along the length of the board, as well as short rocker sections at each end, so you’ll get plenty of purchase off a kicker takeoff and just as much pressability on a handrail or ledge.

When cruising from the lift to the park, or on the days that you’d just prefer to rip up some corduroy and seek out side hits, the Huck Knife has you covered better than most park boards. It can really whip along thanks to the sintered base, and the sidecut has been designed with the ability to hold a strong edge firmly at the forefront.

“While you don’t have to sit on the Mindnich family tree to get on with this one, the construction will hold up to a pro-level pounding”

While you don’t have to sit on the Mindnich family tree to get on with this one, the construction will hold up to a pro-level pounding. The core is mostly Aspen wood, especially selected for its combination of strength and light weight, and the triax fibreglass has better longevity than the biax equivalent.

For anyone wanting to camp out in the park for the majority of the winter, you’d be hard pressed to find a better deal than the Salomon Huck Knife.

A short rockered section at each end makes the Salomon Huck Knife super pressable.

Tester’s Verdict

Sam Oetikeronboardmag.com

“The Huck Knife was probably one of my favourite boards that I tested this year, owing to its perfect combination of pop, medium-soft flex and overall park prowess. I’d been riding the Salomon Villain last season, and the Huck Knife was definitely a step up for me in terms of overall park performance. It feels a little stiffer than the Villain, with a slightly more aggressive camber between the feet, making it much better suited for kickers.

“I’d recommend this snowboard to slightly more experienced park riders”

That said, it still handled rails beautifully, with just the right amount of flex in the nose and tail for locking into presses. The sintered base felt lightening fast on this one, and I loved the clean, minimalistic graphics on the topsheet.

Overall, I’d recommend this snowboard to slightly more experienced park riders, who are after a little more pop and performance over your typical super-soft-flexing jib board. It could also serve very well as a playful all-mountain snowboard for intermediate level riders looking to dabble in freestyle.”

Trade Secrets

Nils Mindnich – Team Rider, Salomon

“I like my things in my life to pop, and this board POPS. It holds a great edge of big jumps, but isn’t too aggressive. It’s playful enough to have a fun time on rails or small features and whatever else you feel like messing around on.

The thing I like most about this board is how fast it is from edge to edge. When It comes to most park boards they normally feel really damp and can’t do much turning, but the Huck Knife is a park board that holds up like an all-mountain board”
