UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Nidecker Gun here

‘Weapon’ is the word that comes to mind when you first look at the Nidecker Gun (and not just because of the name). In the wrong hands, it could wreak havoc – but those who are able to tame it may find that they don’t want to ride anything else ever again.

“You can expect to go from nought to sixty in record time”

Nidecker know a thing or two about building a carving snowboard (see also the Nidecker Concept), and the Gun is based on the larger-than-life models seen in the sport’s early days. The running length is obviously pretty sizeable, as is the sidecut radius, so you can expect to go from nought to sixty in record time.

Like all good carvers it has a camber profile, that still can’t be beaten for gripping the piste firmly and powering you out of turns. Initiation is smooth too, thanks to the extended rocker nose. It may take a run or two to find your flow, but once you do this will obey your every command as you paint lines on the piste.

A snowboard like the Nidecker Gun has to be light and responsive, otherwise it’ll feel (and ride) like a door. That’s why both poplar and bamboo have been used in the core, and a specific combination of biax and triax fibreglass (the former on the bottom, the latter on top) that makes the Gun manageable yet reactive as hell.

“The pure-wood topsheet isn’t just there to look good; it provides excellent dampening, so when things get rough underfoot you’ll be able to hold your line”

The pure-wood topsheet isn’t just there to look good (although few would argue that it’s an added bonus); it provides excellent dampening, so when things get rough underfoot you’ll be able to hold your line and continue to get the most out of this one.

Taking the Nidecker Gun off piste too is highly recommended too; the large surface area makes floating easy, as does that rockered nose. You’ll want to make sure you have plenty of space though, as it’s not really one for squeezing through the gaps in a packed tree run.

The freshly-groomed corduroy is its bread and butter, though; when you have the Nidecker Gun under your feet, every day is a first-chair day.

Tester’s Verdict

John Marrion

“Just strapping into this board makes you realise where it gets its name from. Coming in at either 161cm or 171cm, and with a sidecut radius of 9 or 10 metres, this thing is an absolute weapon!

“All the weight on my back foot goes straight into the contact point below my foot, providing amazing grip”

At first looking down and seeing so much nose in front of me and so little tail took a little getting used to; but once I got my head around it and centred my weight in the middle of the contact points, the response was amazing. Riding the Gun definitely encouraged me to go faster than I ever have on a snowboard.

Having very little tail means all the weight on my back foot goes straight into the contact point below my foot, providing amazing grip. The eccentric old-school shape and sleek minimalistic top sheet definitely turn heads in the lift line, even if the size made me feel like I was compensating for something…

This board is perfect for a more advanced rider who loves charging, or is looking to try something different and get into more serious carving without going full hard-boot.”

Trade Secrets

Thierry Kunz – Chief Marketing Officer, Nidecker

Part of our SNOW SURF  line (designed to give you that feeling of surfing on snow, as the name makes quite clear), this board is ready-made for riders who charge no matter the conditions.

For me, riding fast and doing big turns whenever I ride is way more important than getting air. That’s why I love the Nidecker Gun. No matter how steep, no matter how deep, with this board under your feet, you would go…”

I don't know about everyone else, but the Nidecker Gun certainly is unique.
The stunning outline of the Nidecker Gun is rounded off with this short, tapered tail.
