Amplid’s Peter Bauer has forgotten more about snowboard design than most of us will ever know, and he’s not finished yet. The Amplid Surfari is features in the ‘Centrifugal Collection’ of carve-centric snowboards, and by far the most backcountry-friendly of the three.

“Techniques proven to work in other industries have inspired Amplid’s new ‘Antiphase’ dampening system”

The shape and profile are a good fit; the nose is not only longer and wider than the rest of the board, it also rises up to give you maximum float in powder. There’s a camber section weighted towards the tail of the board, so you still get power through the carves and plenty of pop.

The former is more what the Amplid Surfari is about (other than pow, of course). If you find yourself on a big, motorway piste that’s perfect for confident carves, the shape, profile and long sidecut on this one is just what you need.

Serious efforts have been put into dampening vibrations too; it’s too techy for us to explore in detail here, but techniques proven to work in other industries have inspired Amplid’s new ‘Antiphase’ system that delivers a smoother ride without making the board too heavy or lifeless.

The Amplid Surfari is first and foremost a powder board, but it’s been built to handle much more than that.

Tester’s Verdict

Andrew Duthie – whitelines.com

“This one took some getting used to – it’s quite stiff and demands plenty of input. It’s great once you get going in the powder, though.

Straightlining the Surfari on piste is really good, as it’s just so solid. However it could be a little sluggish when turning, making it hard to really ‘flow’ through the turns. Again, this could probably be improved with a bit more use.

“I wasn’t surprised to learn later about the lengths to which Amplid had gone to reduce chatter on cruddy terrain, as that’s one of the main positives I took away from the Surfari. In that respect, it’s exceptional.”
