Short boards are great fun in the powder, as YES confirmed when they developed the 420. However, when downsizing it’s a lot harder to find a board that’s not just for making turns. Applying a freestyle focus is a lot harder to get right, but the YES 20/20 is perhaps the best example out there.
“You get way more float than any board of its size and shape has any right to offer”
The key to the YES 20/20 is that it’s not just shorter and wider – the base design is completely unique in the snowboarding world. Taking cues from the world of wakeboarding, the YES guys developed a concave section of base and stuck it at both ends of the 20/20.
As you ride through powder, these channel air directly underneath your nose and allow the tail to sink further into the snow, so you get way more float than any board of its size and shape has any right to offer.
The core has also been designed with the ‘Powderhull’ base in mind, and features carbon-covered bamboo rods that bend in line with the sidecut. They don’t interfere with the nose and tail sections, but increase stability and edge hold when needed.
The YES 20/20 is a different beast, but one that’s justified its price tag. If you’ve never tried the Powderhull, perhaps 2017/18 is the season for changing that.
