UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 YES 20/20 here

Short boards are great fun in the powder, as YES confirmed when they developed the 420. However, when downsizing it’s a lot harder to find a board that’s not just for making turns. Applying a freestyle focus is a lot harder to get right, but the YES 20/20 is perhaps the best example out there.

“You get way more float than any board of its size and shape has any right to offer”

The key to the YES 20/20 is that it’s not just shorter and wider – the base design is completely unique in the snowboarding world. Taking cues from the world of wakeboarding, the YES guys developed a concave section of base and stuck it at both ends of the 20/20.

As you ride through powder, these channel air directly underneath your nose and allow the tail to sink further into the snow, so you get way more float than any board of its size and shape has any right to offer.

The core has also been designed with the ‘Powderhull’ base in mind, and features carbon-covered bamboo rods that bend in line with the sidecut. They don’t interfere with the nose and tail sections, but increase stability and edge hold when needed.

The YES 20/20 is a different beast, but one that’s justified its price tag. If you’ve never tried the Powderhull, perhaps 2017/18 is the season for changing that.

Tester’s Verdict

Sam McMahon – whitelines.com

“The year the 20/20 came out our Editor-In-Chief described it as ‘the magic carpet’’. This year I finally managed to try it myself – blessed with eighteen inches of fresh – and oh boy, does it live up to the hype.

“The 20/20 has no equal if you’re all about spinning and buttering through the really deep stuff.”

The Powderhull nose really puts in the work for you, feeling both stable and nimble. It’s pretty cool to watch snow being blasted out in front of you too!

When it comes to switch riding and buttering, the sensation in powder is so odd as it feels like it’s got the same ‘float’ as a park board on a piste. It really has to be experienced to be believed.

It’s a descendent of the YES 420, and if I’m honest I’d still plump for the former due to its more ‘surfy’ directional feeling, but the 20/20 really has no equal if you’re all about spinning and buttering through the really deep stuff.”
