Best Snowboards 2019-2020

Chosen by the Whitelines Test Team

What is the best snowboard? Trust us, you’re not alone in wondering – in fact we get asked this question every day – but in truth, the answer depends on the person looking. Are you a park rat? A powder hound? A piste cruiser? Or maybe you’re a rider who likes to do it all, but can’t be bothered with the faff and expense of building up a quiver.

Whatever your criteria, there is more choice on the market today than ever before – and while it’s hard to find a truly bad board these days, matching your own ability level and riding style with the right deck can really help with progression. It’s all about having confidence in your kit.

The Whitelines Test Team has amassed decades of experience on the mountain and includes retail staff, media, ex-pros and coaches amongst its number. We know a good snowboard when we see it. Together we’ve ridden more than 200 of this year’s new models, so you can rest assured that any snowboard reviews we pen are based on thorough, real-world testing. Of course, that goes for our binding and goggle write-ups too.

“Together we’ve ridden more than 200 of this year’s new models, so you can rest assured that any snowboard reviews we pen are based on thorough, real-world testing”

All that said, the collection below comprises 34 of our favourite snowboards of 2019/20. From surfy powder shapes to classic twin tips, there’s something here for everyone.

If any board catches your eye then you can click through for a more in-depth review, which includes the first hand report from its tester. Or if you want a stronger steer on your next purchase then take a look at the latest Whitelines 100 – our premium gear section featuring the best of the best, as well as our inaugural Whitelines Choice Awards – where our Test Team selected their standout winners accross a range of categories, including park, carving, value and all mountain.

The Best Snowboards For Winter 2019-20

Amplid Pentaquark Snowboard 2019-2020

PRICE: €840

The Pentaquark sits among a series of three boards in what Amplid call their ‘Centrifugal Collection’. Everything about it screams high-speed, high-angle riding on the line. It features a fully positive camber, reinforced with carbon stringers in the tail. It won’t be a forgiving or intuitive ride for many snowboarders and it essentially comes with a ‘minimum entry requirement’. However, for those who’ve been honing the craft of turning for years, even decades, this is your ticket into the big leagues.

    Bataleon Carver Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £429 / €500
The Carver is the purpose-built machine for followers of the tip n’ grip and turn n’ burn movement. Everything about this board is built for life on the edge. While you still get Bataleon’s Triple Base Technology, it’s been specced to handle lightning fast edge changes and deliver a much snappier ride than the smoother, more rolling feeling between the edges that has often been associated with the brand.

Freeride 3BT features a much narrower flat section in the middle and so wider, more stable sidebases to roll each turn into. Then, by opting for a medium uplift in the nose and low uplift in the tail, the edge locks in that little bit quicker.

    PRICE: £429 / €500
Despite the name, the Love Powder isn’t a one trick pony, this is a board that will perform on the piste as well. The width will have your back if you’re getting into Eurocarve territory, with the bigger area underfoot putting paid to toe-verhang and drag as you’re cranking down..

    Bataleon Goliath Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £469 / €550

What makes the best all-mountain boards stand out is, ironically, their ability to blend in. Even down to its understated graphics, the Goliath doesn’t pigeon hole itself. A medium flex, classic camber profile and ’99% Twin’ shape will appeal to park rats and carving addicts alike.
The ‘Freestyle 3BT’ is their most versatile in the line. Each end of the board has an evenly proportioned three-step, spoon-like shape, with increased uplift in the widest parts of the board, known as ‘Sidekick’.

    Bataleon Omni Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £429 / €500

The Bataleon Omni epitomises what freeriding is about. A base that absolutely flies and a rock-solid core that holds steady at warp speed? Tick. A board that floats on the deepest powder days without so much as an inch of back foot lean? Tick. All packaged up with a profile that not only delivers power and aggression running its entire length but does so in a way that won’t T-bone you the second you take your eye off the ball? Yep, one more big massive tick.

It’s the omnivorous juggernaut that goes full hog across the mountain and still gets you home in one piece.

    Borealis Marauder Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £499 / €559
True to its word, tiger shark inspired graphics and even the shape emulate the look and feel of being strapped into the predator. The nose just stalks its way into every turn with purpose and power and then with a flick of that tail you’re propelled out of the exit.
That aesthetic is thankfully backed up by its spec, too. The ‘Blizzard Camber’ combines a long rocker section in the nose, with a setback camber between the feet for float and power that’s virtually unrivalled for a board of only 154cm. And the smaller rocker in the tail will assist those brave enough to attempt putting in a switch landing.

Burton Anti Social Women’s Splitboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £700 / €780
The Burton Anti-Social splitboard has a directional shape with 12mm taper. The increased volume in the nose keeps it from submarining in the deeper snow and increases its mobility. With camber in the back of the board you can be sure to hold an edge better than you hold your liquor on a Friday night, while the rocker in the front will keep you cruising along easily.

The light core of the Anti-Social makes it an ideal board for anyone looking to buy their first splitboard. When you’re skinning up mountains, weight makes all the difference, so even if it seems marginal you’ll be thankful for it as you’re halfway up.

    Burton Hometown Hero Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £510 / €600
This hero isn’t quite as aggressive as some chargers but it’s definitely got the minerals to stand up against the heavy hitters. Its medium to stiff flex makes this a powerful board and you’ll be charging groomers and big powder lines faster than you can say FSC Certified Dragonfly 600g Core – which, funny you mention it, is precisely what’s under the hood.

Burton’s Hometown Hero is a lightweight beast. However, this lightness does not compromise the overall strength of the board. The Dragonfly core uses end-grain wood in the impact zones of the stick, and you can blast through choppy snow and chunder with ease.

    Burton Kilroy Directional Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £380 / €440

The Kilroy Directional has, you guessed it, a directional shape and the elongated nose offers the effortless float you’d expect from it. The tail features a cut out to reduce the volume towards the back of the board, forcing it to sink more in powder to accentuate the nose lift. It isn’t just the snazzy new name that has earned the board a spot in the Whitelines 100 – it’s the simple fact that this truly is a great board.

Remaining true to the Kilroy line, the Kilroy Directional is a camber board through and through, just like its softer brother, the Kilroy Twin. A traditional camber profile provides powerful turns, unmatched pop, precision and impeccable edge hold. In other words, this thing is the dictionary definition of fun.

    Capita Super DOA Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £600 / €650
The Capita Super DOA is a new, slightly stiffer version of the Capita DOA and with somewhat different tech. A more aggressive ride than its namesake, it’s built for stomping, slashing and sliding.

The hybrid profile is designed to rip all over the hill, regardless of the conditions. With camber between the feet, a short flat section outside the feet and an even shorter rocker section in the nose and tail, you’ll get pop, stability and float. The stiffer flex will lend itself to larger freestyle riding and boosting off of features.

    PRICE: £440 / €480
With a mid-body camber, flat tail and reverse cambered nose the Equalizer allows for both pop and stability. The nose extends further on while the tail becomes blunt, which makes for a perfect powdery float.

New for this season is the dual blaster ashpop core, which means that the already durable board now has an even more dense and powerful core for increased board control.

    GNU Müllair Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £525 / €600
The Müllair hasn’t changed much over the past few years, and to us that’s a pretty good thing- if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and all that jazz. The Müllair shifts its inserts back towards the tail of the board to keep your weight set back when you’re surfing through nipple deep snow. The nose of the board is a little bit wider than the tail as well, which aids in keeping it plaining out of the powder.

GNU Pro Choice Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £510 / €570
The Pro Choice is Jamie Anderson’s weapon of choice for when she wants to rip shit up. It’s a beefed-up version of her super popular Ladies Choice, built for when you need to pack a powerful punch wherever you are on the mountain.

The board features Mervin’s C3 camber profile – which is their most aggressive – and has a shorter, mellower rocker between the bindings, then more dynamic camber under each binding for increased power and drive. The fact that it’s only very slightly rockered in the middle compared to its sister the Ladies Choice gives it more explosive pop and a more aggressive on-piste performance.

    Jones Frontier Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £419 / €480
The directional camrock profile definitely favours the nose of the board for floating in deeper conditions, but there’s ample room in the tail to switch things up whenever the mood takes you. Subtle spoon profiling in the nose and tail gives increased lift in powder but makes transferring between edges on the piste a doozy, too.

When you want to push your riding, there’s a 7000 sintered base to keep up with you and the subtle bumps along the sidewall, known here as Traction Tech provides a little extra grip in hardpack conditions.

Jones Mind Expander Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £529 / €600
This directional beauty of a board is made for the creative freeride and freestyle rippers. The Surf Rocker shape allows for an insanely floaty feel in powder and keeps the nose pointed skywards without an ounce of effort. Its short tail also allows for easier turns and surfing your way through whatever snowfields you may encounter will feel effortless.

Despite the Mind Expander’s home being in powder, a spin on the piste is definitely enjoyable too. It might not be the smoothest board to ride on the piste with, with a stiffer nose which dampens the ride, in the right conditions it’ll rail a carve like the best of them. Worth keeping in mind when dealing with a shape like this (blunted nose, squared off tail and tight sidecut), you might want to choose a shorter model than you’d usually go for.

K2 spent years developing their Inked Glass top sheet technology – it shaves 10% off the weight, but still retains all its former strength. Korua Tranny Finder+ Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: €700
The Plus series moves away from the iconic red and white colourways and opts for a stealth-like black on black, cementing their image as the altogether more powerful, stronger and faster machines. It feels a bit like strapping into a puma, only this one’s on the hunt for freshies and corduroy.

Its versatility comes down to its outline. The diamond shape nose and tail reduce the overall running length but don’t compromise on that extra floaty surface area. The width underfoot not only helps in powder but allows for gravity-defying edge angles, as you can lean into near-horizontal positions without ever dragging out on the boots.

    Korua Pencil Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: €449

  • BUY DIRECT FROM KORUA
  • Good news ladies, at long last the boys at KORUA have broadened the line to include a couple of new female-friendly sizes. The Pencil hits the shelves in an all-new 147 size and is primed for ripping up the groomers. The red and white cult classics have never been known for sticking to convention, and the pencil epitomises the brand’s raison d’être – yearning for turning.

By keeping a springy camber underfoot, the Pencil still remains surprisingly agile. That’s also thanks to a humongous rocker in the nose, which brings the contact points far closer to your front foot and allows it to feel much shorter than that dragon’s tooth of an outline suggests. Then, by tightening the turning circle up with KORUA’s carving specific sidecut, you can keep the manoeuvrability without losing and a single degree of their renowned palm dragging, high-angle, riding on the edge.

    Lib Tech NO.43 Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £490 / €550
The medium flex will gives the board a really versatile feel. The combination of tri and biax fibreglass layers result in a board with all the response and support you need for charging, with enough ‘press-ability’ and forgiveness to still have fun when you want to take your foot off the gas.

If conditions get icy, Lib’s Magne-Traction should serve as your trusty comfort blanket, keeping your edge firmly locked into the snow, regardless of how hard-packed it is out there. The serration-style edge increases contact points with the snow along the length of the board’s edge, without interfering with the overall forgiving feel of the board. A double-edged sword, if you will.

The flat nose has a pronounced rocker underneath it, to help lift the front of the board out of the snow when you’re riding in powder to make it float better. Rome Lo-Fi Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

The Lo-Fi is a classic Rome board, back with a vengeance sporting a snazzy, new shape for 2020. For those girls who won’t take no for an answer, who demand the very best from their boards and who rip shit up harder than anyone else, the Lo-Fi might just be the board you’ve been waiting for.

Built with a hybrid modern camrock profile, the Lo-Fi has got the sauce to tear up the whole mountain with no dramas. The long camber section between the feet delivers unmatched stability at speed, unreal edge hold and an aggressive ride that’s begging to be ripped hard. Rome Warden Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £350 / €400
Utilising Rome’s Fusion Camber profile, The Warden has a small early-rise rocker zone in the tip and tail. This slight rocker will help to keep the board surfing along nicely when you’re off the beaten track, rather than you leaning so far back your back leg feels like it’s been chewed off. The rocker will also mellow up the board a little by stopping it from catching its edges so easily.

A softer flexing model, it’ll be perfect for newer riders to build up confidence, with the ability to push themselves as they progress. It’s not a ‘beginner board’ that you’ll outgrow after a week of riding. Or if you’re a baller on a budget, and you’re looking for a go anywhere, do anything shred stick that isn’t gonna break the bank, then you’re in the right place.

    Salomon Assassin Pro Snowboard 2019-2020

Introducing the premium version of the all-mountain ace, the Salomon Assassin, it’s the Assassin Pro. This is truly a weapon. To the untrained eye, there might be not much to distinguish between the two Assassins but the Pro is the beefy meathead brother.

Just like its namesake, the Assassin Pro also carries a camrock profile, directional twin shape and quadralized side cuts. What tells these two apart, in the main, is the core. The Assassin Pro’s core is made out of lightweight paulownia, a core type that Salomon likes to call the Ghost Green Core. Paulownia is one of the newer woods used for snowboard manufacturing, and one of its signature traits is that it is light yet strong.

The Salomon Huck Knife Pro might as well be the best thing since sliced bread. If you thought the Huck Knife couldn’t get any better, well, you were wrong.

The strong camber underneath the bindings provides the board with incredible strength. This is a poppy yet stable ride with the rocker at tip and tail playing its part too – you’ll find pressing on rails and boxes comfortable.

    Salomon Speedway Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £560
Salomon’s rocketlike sintered base combined with the stiff flex gives the Speedway all the speed you’d ever need from a board.

The directional shape combined with the setback camber, meanwhile, gives the board tremendous control and power whether you’re straight-lining or carving.

    YES Hybrid Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £489
What happens when two of YES Snowboard’s most prolific freeride decks bump uglies? You get the Hybrid. On the 420 side of the family, the board gets its short and fat genes which paved the way for a revolution in powder specific shapes. Then, from its PYL heritage, it has that extra kick up the arse for charging harder, steeper lines. An unlikely romance, for sure, but the by-product has the look and feel of a modern-day classic.
