Why we chose the Rome Ravine Snowboard: It’s an all mountain maverick.

The Ravine was a new addition to the Rome line last season, and it turned heads all winter, it’s Alek Oestrengs board of choice when he wants to rip pow stashes and tree runs. If it’s good enough for the RK1 rocker, it’s good enough for us.

The Rome Ravine is a board engineered for the cliff dropping, mega slashing, crud smashing chargers out there. The boards profile is unique enough that it’s got the minerals to be able to handle whatever you can throw its way.

Starting with positive camber under the back foot to give the board the aggression and life you want for hooning it on piste, mellowing out into a flat middle to keep it stable and less catchy, and then finally 3D rocker in the nose.

The spoon-like nose will give you the extra lift you need when you’re surfing the pow without turning you into old lean back Larry. It’ll also give you smoother turn initiation when you’re riding groomers and make the board slightly less catchy and twitchy on piste.

The blunted nose and tail give you extra balance as you’re spinning and sliding, allowing you to ride a slightly shorter board than usual, and giving you added glide through snow. Speed demons rejoice, the SinterTrue base will keep you slipping and sliding and is easily repairable for when you cringe at the sound of a rock scrape.

2 bamboo rods run from outside the inserts on both sides in the tail out towards the contact points. These help to transfer the energy from your bindings to the contact points quickly and efficiently and will improve your response time when you’re pumping up a storm with your back leg. The rods also increase the torsional stiffness in the tail, giving you a smidgen of extra control, and create a more dynamic pop under the back foot.

Rome have come out swinging with the Ravine this season, and certainly aren’t pulling any punches. If you fancy going toe to toe with Mother Nature, and taking on her gnarliest terrain- then get into the ring with the Ravine strapped to your feet.

Tester’s Verdict

Jon Bird LD Mountain Centre

“The Rome Ravine is directional all mountain snowboard with a tapered shape, aggressive sidecut, directional camber setback towards the tail and a soft playful flex.

“It slayed the deeper stuff with effortless float and a great playful surfy feel thanks to the rocker in nose”

As you would expect from the spec of the Ravine, it slayed the deeper stuff with effortless float and had a great playful surfy feel thanks to the rocker in nose. On the groomers the Ravines deep sidecut locked in fun carves, ploughing through rutted crud with smooth forgiving control.

Rome have made an awesome board in the Ravine, one that is perfect for an experienced all mountain rider who prefers the deep and steep but wants something to be his daily driver on the groomers and side hits (especially good when on fun shreds with mates). The Ravine is a versatile all mountain snowboard that brings the fun to all terrain no matter the conditions.”

Trade Secrets

Matt Stillman – International Marketing Manager, Rome SDS

“The Ravine is a board designed for riders who want the all-mountain performance of directional camber, with the playfulness of a softer flex pattern. It’s a board that froths for deeper days, but still brings the fun to groomers or when you’re simply lapping sidehits with the crew. Built with a 3D rockered nose for effortless float, deep sidecut to lay ruts and a positive cambered tail for throwing clouds and stomping backseat landings – the Ravine is a pure party-wave of versatility for riders who paddle out no matter the conditions.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

Andrew Duthiewhitelines.com

If you like a powerful tail, the Rome Mountain Division may be what you’ve been looking for. The board is still overall, but you can instantly feel how it’s loaded up at the back. Making it work for you doesn’t take a Herculean effort, but you do have to be pretty switched on.

“There’s just not much of an excitement factor with this board. Perhaps that’s unfair, as it doesn’t have any obvious flaws”

Everything else about the Mountain Division says ‘dependable all-mountain workhorse’. It’s not all that lively, but does a great job at killing chatter. It’s light, but not remarkably so.

If these sound like criticisms… well, I guess they are. There’s just not much of an excitement factor with this board. Perhaps that’s unfair, as unlike plenty of other boards I could mention, it doesn’t have any obvious flaws.

But now that there’s so many boards out there that get the heart racing (including several elsewhere in Rome’s stable), it’s hard to get too worked up about the Mountain Division, as serviceable as it may be.”
