Best Freeride Snowboards 2019-2020

Chosen by the Whitelines Test Team

In the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Arnold, in Speilberg’s ’93 classic, Jurassic Park: Hold onto your butts. Your classic freeride snowboards are your hard and fast chargers. These ones are for all the riders out there who fancy themselves at giving ol’ Jeremy Jones, Xavier de le Rue and Travis Rice a run for their money.

Aggression is the name of the game with this category. Expect to see a lot of directional shapes, positive camber through the mid-portion of the board, and cores so stiff you’d think they’d been injected with a lifetime’s supply of viagra before leaving the factory.

“In the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Arnold, in Speilberg’s ’93 classic, Jurassic Park: Hold onto your butts”

Of course, a decent all-round freeride deck won’t just be reserved for those of you dropping into the Bec de Rosse or throwing yourself, balls first, into Corbett’s Couloir. Many of our top picks are just as capable at charging morning groomers, hammering through the slush at the end of the season, or slashing through trees and blowing up windlips. If you’re spending the majority of your time riding fast, off the front foot, on and off the piste, a freeride board will make a great addition to your quiver.

Naturally, there’s some overlap here between a couple of other Whitelines Choice categories, like our pick of the Best Carving Snowboards or Best Powder Snowboards, but a good freeride deck blends the lines between the different areas of the mountains and properly delivers across the board. Whether you’re weathering choppy seas, cruising at low tide, or kicking up a storm, these ones have got your back for every condition the mountains will throw at you.

Bataleon Omni Snowboard 2019-2020

PRICE: £429 / €500

The Bataleon Omni epitomises what freeriding is about. A base that absolutely flies and a rock-solid core that holds steady at warp speed? Tick. A board that floats on the deepest powder days without so much as an inch of back foot lean? Tick. All packaged up with a profile that not only delivers power and aggression running its entire length but does so in a way that won’t T-bone you the second you take your eye off the ball? Yep, one more big massive tick.

    Borealis Marauder Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £499 / €559

Tiger shark inspired graphics and even the shape emulate the look and feel of being strapped into the predator. Nobody’s going to look at the shape and think ‘versatile’. In reality, though, it steamrolls through slush bumps, slices into hardpack and isn’t even too awkward through the park. Maybe not the ‘fish out of water’ it looks like, after all.

    Burton Hometown Hero Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £510 / €600

It’s like snowboarding in HD – so sharp and accurate. It changes the way you see the mountain. It’s soft enough between the feet that you can still feel yourself working the board, but it holds a line on edge like the stiffest freeride boards on the market.

The Müllair is the pro model from Swiss freeride phenom Nicolas Müller and is built to withstand all of his riding – from the steepest faces to the deepest bowls. Nicolas has the wonderful ability to make even his most insane riding look incredibly smooth and effortless, and we’re not saying this board will make you ride like him but… there’s no harm in trying right?

    Jones Frontier Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £419 / €480

Formally known as the Explorer, the Jones Frontier gets a fresh lick of paint, an overhauled core packed with eco materials and finds its way back into our 100 selection. By no means is this the gnarliest, stiffest, fastest or most experimental shape from Jones, but simple things done well are often the most impressive. Especially when they’re finished off with that topsheet.

    PRICE: €700

Where the Classic series relied purely on their shaping to create the best riding experience, the Plus series beefs things up on all sides. The flex now jumps up to an eight, thanks to a carbon multi-axial webbing layup and a sturdier wood core, while the underside is upgraded to a nano high-speed sintered base.

    Ride Superpig Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £500 / €570

The Superpig is yet another relative of the infamous Ride Warpig, but the Superpig is no dorky cousin – it’s the bodybuilding uncle who rips yellow pages in half at family gatherings. It has more tech than you can shake your tail at and, because of this, it’s not ideal for a beginner. It’s a pretty stiff board, that wants to be ridden hard and fast.

As Salomon puts it, this board is for the modern downhill charger. Salomon’s rocketlike sintered base combined with the stiff flex gives the board all the speed you’d ever need. YES Hybrid Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £489

What happens when two of YES Snowboard’s most prolific freeride decks bump uglies? You get the Hybrid. On the YES 420 side of the family, the board gets its short and fat genes which paved the way for a revolution in powder specific shapes. Then, from its YES PYL heritage, it has that extra kick up the arse for charging harder, steeper lines. An unlikely romance, for sure, but the by-product has the look and feel of a modern-day classic.

    Borealis Koi Snowboard 2019-2020

This kind of shape has become synonymous with floating over the top of big, deep powder fields. The stubby, crescent-shaped tail drives down and takes most of the effort out of the ride, while that elongated nose rocker handles the rest. Lose yourself drawing lines through the Shirakaba trees.

Then, bring it back on to the piste and watch this zen-like wise old warrior go full-blown ‘Zatōichi’ in a supercharged, sword-wielding, blind rampage of fury.

    PRICE: £395 / €449

Just like Gigi Rüf’s own riding style, the Brainstorm will rip in most conditions, but finds the peak of its performance in powder. The 15mm setback stance is matched with a backseat camrock. While the camber favours the back-foot, there is still a rocker in the tail albeit one that’s far less pronounced than the one in the nose. Riding switch is very doable, especially with the lack of taper in the Brainstorm’s outline. The profile will, however, be best suited for charging with your leading leg. The deeper the better.
