Why we chose the Jones Mind Expander Women’s Snowboard: The alternative freeride board for females with a surfy feel.

Last year the world was introduced to the Women’s version of the Jones Mind Expander snowboard and after its immediate success, it’s no surprise that the board is back for a second season.

“Its short tail also allows for easier turns and surfing your way through whatever snowfields you may encounter will feel effortless”

This directional beauty of a board is made for the creative freeride and freestyle rippers. The Surf Rocker shape allows for an insanely floaty feel in powder and keeps the nose pointed skywards without an ounce of effort. Its short tail also allows for easier turns and surfing your way through whatever snowfields you may encounter will feel effortless.

The predominant rocker profile won’t make it the most aggressive board to ride on piste, but carbon additives in the nose help to keep the chatter at bay and the tighter sidecut and stiffer tail mean you still rail a carve like the best of them, when conditions are on point.

Jones has never been a brand to “shrink it and pink it”. To make that even clearer for this season, they’ve changed the purple top sheet graphics for greenish. In addition to this more eye-catching change, there are also quite a few technical upgrades on this all-mountain ace.

For this season, the FSC Bamboo Surf Core’s been updated, which allows better edge hold and more powerful turns. New for 2020 are the sustainable Basalt Power Stringers, made with 100% natural fibres – not only do they keep mother nature happy, but as a result of the improved torsional response they also eliminate board chatter. Another new addition for this season are the Rounded Recycled Sidewalls. These protect the edges of topsheet from chipping, so your board won’t look like something you picked up from the flea market by the end of the season.

Glide, flow, float – three things you’ll definitely find more enjoyable once you’re strapped into the Mind Expander. Who doesn’t love the idea of getting some of those low speed slashes in while spraying all of their mates directly in the face with heaps of fresh snow? The Mind Expander is perfect for that particular pastime, and many other things to boot.

Tester’s Verdict

Stella PenttiWhitelines

“Yet another success story from Jones. Prior to trying it, I’d heard loads of good things about this board and was encouraged to give it a go by some mates.

“As much as I love baby pink, it is very refreshing to see brands making the designs of their female snowboards a bit more gender neutral”

The conditions were ideal for taking this board out for a spin. It was the morning after two days of dumping. Heavily. There was so much snow that some parts of the resort had to be kept closed – so you can only imagine how stoked we were waking up to a bluebird morning, realising that these parts would now be opened and filled with untouched powder fields.

The short tail of the Jones Mind Expander made powder turns feel effortless – I found myself simply floating through all those white piles of snow. Once the fields were gone and we were forced to enter the pistes again, is when the board truly surprised me . Despite its shape, it really was a lot of fun on the groomers.

Definitely one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had this season. The rocker makes surfing in deep snow feel effortless, while the stiffness makes it perfectly aggressive on the slopes. On a less technical note, I was stoked on the greenish topsheet. As much as I love baby pink from time to time, it is very refreshing to see brands making the designs of their female snowboards a bit more gender neutral.”

Trade Secrets

Iris Lazzareschi – Jones Ambassador

“When the snow is soft and i’m ready for a playful resort day I ride the Women’s Mind Expander. It’s got a ton of float in pow and it’s super easy to turn so you don’t need to give it a lot of leg power to keep speed and make quick direction changes. The Women’s Mind Expander is the perfect board for those dream pow days or sunny spring days carving through the slush.”

Tester’s Verdict

Joy Dutchsnowboard-asylum.com

“What a game changer! The Mind Expander was something completely different to anything I had ridden before, and after a bit of getting used to I had a whale of a time riding it.

“Surprisingly fun and playful on piste, I found it to be poppier than I had expected”

The massive nose and stubby little tail meant it was impossible not to get a beautiful floaty sensation in the powder, and the fact that it was shorter than a traditional powder board meant it was still really nimble and quick in the slashy turns.

Getting down to Eurocarves was a real treat, and the board made it really easy to get super low. Surprisingly fun and playful on piste, I found it to be poppier than I had expected, and the super soft nose meant putting in a couple of presses wasn’t out of the question.”
