Best Snowboards Graphics 2019-2020

Chosen by the Whitelines Test Team

You can deny it ‘till the cows come home, but deep down we can all admit that a major factor in choosing a new board is the graphics. Maybe not the most discerning factor, but c’mon, it’s up there. Your choice of board says a lot about you, and it’s often the first impression someone will get of you on the hill. Your snowboard is a part of your identity on the mountain, you wouldn’t catch Kazushi Yamauchi rocking a green board would you? Don’t let a graphic sway you entirely though, there’s no point in buying a super stiff 175cm monster if you’re purely wanting to ride urban rails just because it looks cool. I mean go ahead if you really want to, they’re your knees after all…

“Deep down we can all admit that a major factor in choosing a new board is the graphics”

There’s something out there for everyone, whether you’re wanting a traditional wood grain or something out of a weird acid dream. It’s becoming more and more popular for brands to collab with artists so there’s a surplus of super inventive designs on the market each year. If you’re really still struggling to find anything that floats your fancy, there are brands that allow you to create a custom top sheet and base for a price.

This list is one of the most difficult to put together, because no one can agree on what a ‘cool’ graphic is. We got suggestions for our test team, and asked some riders and industry folk, so there’s a bit of an eclectic mix in there. A broad age range and a multitude of riding styles are represented in our list, so there’s a little something for everyone. You’ll probably disagree with some – but one mans trash is another mans Custom as they say. Shoot us a message if you think we’ve missed any bangers and we’ll get them added. Meanwhile, have a gander at our top picks and get inspired.

Nidecker Liberty Snowboard 2019-2020

PRICE: £525 / €550

The Nidecker Liberty was first introduced to the world back in 1986 (hence its brilliant neon design). Reintroduced now, 13 years on, this blast from the past becomes the most laid back freeride board Nidecker’s ever had the pleasure to produce.

Borealis Marauder Snowboard 2019-2020

PRICE: £499 / €559

First impressions when this one came out the box were something along the lines of “Sweet Jesus, it’s a flat-packed tiger shark, where’s my bindings?”

Sometimes you can just look at a board and build a picture in your head of how it will ride. The Marauder had me frothing – a super-wide, progressive, blunt nose, oversized waist width, and that short stubby double shark-fin tail.

    Bataleon Carver Snowboard 2019-2020

    Burton Free Thinker Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £500 / €580

As was the case with its brother, the Burton Free Thinker’s top sheet is designed by legendary street artist Keith Haring. It goes without saying that these two boards will definitely go down in history. If you want to get your hands on something that will quite likely become a collector’s piece – here’s your chance.

    Jones Frontier Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £419 / €480

Special mention has to go to RP Robert’s artwork featured here on the Frontier. The UK based artist is no stranger to a Jones deck, but surely this is his most ambitious work to date – featuring no less than six iconic peaks from three continents. If ever an image can evoke the feeling of what backcountry snowboarding is about, it’s surely found here, right between your feet.

    K2 Medium Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £470 / €530

“Also, let’s just take a moment to talk about the graphics. A child could have drawn them. It’s a felt tip pen outline pigeon on a grey background. Brands spend thousands on artist collabs or building up a story through the design. K2 have gone for a pigeon. And it’s so goddamn good. I was immediately shut down for suggesting this as the best graphic I’d seen all year, but I stand by it. Genius.”

    Bataleon Disaster Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £349 / €400

The snowbaord comes wrapped up in a bad to the bone black and white graphic, headed up by KORUA’s own Aaron Schwartz, who designed the base typeface. Who knew a recipe for Disaster could be this good?

    Burton Kilroy Twin Snowboard 2019-2020

Capita Kazu Kokubo Pro Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £530 / €579

It has got carbon, bamboo, flax, all the tech of the day, but all that went out the window when I saw the graphics. Seriously, this board is beautiful, it has the most detailed Japanese tattoo imagery, with super vibrant colours and intricate detail. I didn’t know whether to frame it and hang it on the wall or ride it – ride it I did, of course I did, and I’m pleased to say it is not just a pretty picture. This board is a beast.

    Capita The Asymulator Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £460 / €499

In your hand, the first thing you notice is the prime graphics. Odd and crazy, on a gnarly asymmetrical shape. This isn’t fashion over function, the Capita Asymulator delivers in all the right areas.

    Endeavor BOD Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £499

It’s not unusual for snowboard brands to split their range into performance categories, or look towards surfing or skating’s heritage in their design. Endeavor like to do things a little differently. Their unisex Foundation, United and Powder Quiver series draw inspiration from military aviation, architecture, furniture design and European supercars. The RaBODnger recreates the aesthetic of satellite imagery from US AirForce and puts itself centre of the map as a solid all-rounder in the line.

    PRICE: £520/€580

“Also, it 100% gets my support for best graphics winner. What a fucking great job they’ve done.As a BMX bike riding enthusiast I’m stoked to see the Mervin boys getting Damian Fulton back on the pay-roll. Fulton’s creation Radical Rick was an old cartoon that featured in BMX Plus, one that has made its way back onto a Lib Tech after many years. Hyped on that!”

    PRICE: £379 / €430

The Aaron Schwartz is a new addition to the stacked Lobster line-up and this board is their answer to the ‘short and stubby’ range that everyone is frothing over recently. Designed to be ridden 5-10cm shorter than your normal board, you’ll see that good things come in small packages.

    Lobster Stomper Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £399 / €460

The Stomper has seen a few changes this year to make it a bit more of an all mountain charger rather than an out and out freestyle machine – not to mention some of the sickest graphics we saw all season.

    West Salaz Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £579 / €609

If snowboarding is an expression of creativity, you won’t find a more visceral, in your face, depiction than the salacious topsheet of the West Salaz. Move aside Capita – there’s a new weirdo in town.

    YES Greats UnInc Snowboard 2019-2020

    PRICE: £489

Throwning it back to the glory years, the YES Greats UnInc pays heritage to the founders’ riding roots with one of the most original topsheets we saw all season. Fortunately, the radness don’t stop here. Following it’s redesign last year, the Greats UnInc is one of the most original true twins on the market, and one that more than lives up its name.
