There’s really no such thing as “the one best snowboard”. In fact, it all comes down to your personal preferences. Are you looking for a park stick, a powder board or an all-mountain cruiser? Do you prefer a stiff flex or a soft one? Or have you simply just began your journey as a snowboarder, and are looking for a board that can help you get to the next level. Which brings us to the question – How to choose your snowboard?

Even if you know what you’re looking for in your next board, the number of choices might seem a bit overwhelming at times. Where do you start? Maybe you’re drawn to the familiar brands or a cool top sheet, or maybe your choice is more driven by the price tag. Either way, there are more than enough options to choose from, which is why our aim is to make this a bit easier for you.

In an ideal world, we would head out to every board test to try out multiple snowboards until we find our favourite. In reality, this just doesn’t happen, which is why we’ve compiled a team of riders with years of experience to do this for you. The Whitelines Test Team includes retail staff, media, ex-pros, coaches and snowbums who’ve spent years developing an understanding for the fine art of snowboarding. Together, we’ve ridden more than 200 of this year’s new models, so you can rest assured that any snowboard reviews we pen are based on thorough, real-world testing.     Bataleon Carver Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Carver is the purpose-built machine for followers of the tip n’ grip and turn n’ burn movement. Everything about this board is built for life on the edge. While you still get Bataleon’s Triple Base Technology, it’s been specced to handle lightning fast edge changes and deliver a much snappier ride than the smoother, more rolling feeling between the edges that has often been associated with the brand.

    Freeride 3BT features a much narrower flat section in the middle and so wider, more stable sidebases to roll each turn into. Then, by opting for a medium uplift in the nose and low uplift in the tail, the edge locks in that little bit quicker.

    Bataleon Goliath Snowboard 2019-2020

    Borealis Marauder Snowboard 2019-2020

    True to its word, tiger shark inspired graphics and even the shape emulate the look and feel of being strapped into the predator. The nose just stalks its way into every turn with purpose and power and then with a flick of that tail you’re propelled out of the exit.

The ‘Blizzard Camber’ combines a long rocker section in the nose, with a setback camber between the feet for float and power that’s virtually unrivalled for a board of only 154cm.     Burton Hometown Hero Snowboard 2019-2020

    This hero isn’t quite as aggressive as some chargers but it’s definitely got the minerals to stand up against the heavy hitters. Its medium to stiff flex makes this a powerful board and you’ll be charging groomers and big powder lines faster than you can say FSC Certified Dragonfly 600g Core – which, funny you mention it, is precisely what’s under the hood.

    Burton’s Hometown Hero is a lightweight beast. However, this lightness does not compromise the overall strength of the board. The Dragonfly core uses end-grain wood in the impact zones of the stick, and you can blast through choppy snow and chunder with ease.

    Capita Super DOA Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Capita Super DOA is a new, slightly stiffer version of the Capita DOA and with somewhat different tech. A more aggressive ride than its namesake, it’s built for stomping, slashing and sliding.

    The hybrid profile is designed to rip all over the hill, regardless of the conditions. With camber between the feet, a short flat section outside the feet and an even shorter rocker section in the nose and tail, you’ll get pop, stability and float. The stiffer flex will lend itself to larger freestyle riding and boosting off of features.

    Capita The Equalizer Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    With a mid-body camber, flat tail and reverse cambered nose the Equalizer allows for both pop and stability. The nose extends further on while the tail becomes blunt, which makes for a perfect powdery float.

    GNU Müllair Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Müllair hasn’t changed much over the past few years, and to us that’s a pretty good thing- if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and all that jazz. The Müllair shifts its inserts back towards the tail of the board to keep your weight set back when you’re surfing through nipple deep snow. The nose of the board is a little bit wider than the tail as well, which aids in keeping it plaining out of the powder.

    GNU Pro Choice Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Pro Choice is Jamie Anderson’s weapon of choice for when she wants to rip shit up. It’s a beefed-up version of her super popular Ladies Choice, built for when you need to pack a powerful punch wherever you are on the mountain.

    The board features Mervin’s C3 camber profile – which is their most aggressive – and has a shorter, mellower rocker between the bindings, then more dynamic camber under each binding for increased power and drive. The fact that it’s only very slightly rockered in the middle compared to its sister the Ladies Choice gives it more explosive pop and a more aggressive on-piste performance.

    Jones Frontier Snowboard 2019-2020

    The directional camrock profile definitely favours the nose of the board for floating in deeper conditions, but there’s ample room in the tail to switch things up whenever the mood takes you. Subtle spoon profiling in the nose and tail gives increased lift in powder but makes transferring between edges on the piste a doozy, too.

    When you want to push your riding, there’s a 7000 sintered base to keep up with you and the subtle bumps along the sidewall, known here as Traction Tech provides a little extra grip in hardpack conditions.

    Jones Mind Expander Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    This directional beauty of a board is made for the creative freeride and freestyle rippers. The Surf Rocker shape allows for an insanely floaty feel in powder and keeps the nose pointed skywards without an ounce of effort. Its short tail also allows for easier turns and surfing your way through whatever snowfields you may encounter will feel effortless.

    Despite the Mind Expander’s home being in powder, a spin on the piste is definitely enjoyable too. It might not be the smoothest board to ride on the piste with, with a stiffer nose which dampens the ride, in the right conditions it’ll rail a carve like the best of them. Worth keeping in mind when dealing with a shape like this (blunted nose, squared off tail and tight sidecut), you might want to choose a shorter model than you’d usually go for.

    K2 Medium Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Medium is brand new for this season, a pro model made for freestyle demon Jake Kuzyk, it was designed with his high octane, energetic riding in mind. K2 spent years developing their Inked Glass top sheet technology – it shaves 10% off the weight, but still retains all its former strength.     Korua Tranny Finder+ Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Plus series moves away from the iconic red and white colourways and opts for a stealth-like black on black, cementing their image as the altogether more powerful, stronger and faster machines. It feels a bit like strapping into a puma, only this one’s on the hunt for freshies and corduroy.

    Its versatility comes down to its outline. The diamond shape nose and tail reduce the overall running length but don’t compromise on that extra floaty surface area. The width underfoot not only helps in powder but allows for gravity-defying edge angles, as you can lean into near-horizontal positions without ever dragging out on the boots.

The Pencil hits the shelves in an all-new 147 size and is primed for ripping up the groomers. The red and white cult classics have never been known for sticking to convention, and the pencil epitomises the brand’s raison d’être – yearning for turning.

    By keeping a springy camber underfoot, the Pencil still remains surprisingly agile. That’s also thanks to a humongous rocker in the nose, which brings the contact points far closer to your front foot and allows it to feel much shorter than that dragon’s tooth of an outline suggests.     Lib Tech NO.43 Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020

    The medium flex will gives the board a really versatile feel. The combination of tri and biax fibreglass layers result in a board with all the response and support you need for charging, with enough ‘press-ability’ and forgiveness to still have fun when you want to take your foot off the gas.

    If conditions get icy, Lib’s Magne-Traction should serve as your trusty comfort blanket, keeping your edge firmly locked into the snow, regardless of how hard-packed it is out there.     Ride Superpig Snowboard 2019-2020

    The Superpig is yet another relative of the infamous Warpig, but the Superpig is no dorky cousin – it’s the bodybuilding uncle who rips yellow pages in half at family gatherings.

    It has the classic Pig shape – blunt nose and tail reducing swing weight and allowing you to ride a slightly shorter, lighter, board. The flat nose has a pronounced rocker underneath it, to help lift the front of the board out of the snow when you’re riding in powder to make it float better. The rest of the board is cambered to give you solid edge hold on piste, while the four contact points make the board more stable and likely to bite on sketchy ice.

    The Agent has long been a powerhouse in the Rome line, a standout board amongst an arguably impressive array.     The Rome Ravine is a board engineered for the cliff dropping, mega slashing, crud smashing chargers out there. The boards profile is unique enough that it’s got the minerals to be able to handle whatever you can throw its way.

    The spoon-like nose will give you the extra lift you need when you’re surfing the pow without turning you into old lean back Larry. It’ll also give you smoother turn initiation when you’re riding groomers and make the board slightly less catchy and twitchy on piste.

    Rome Warden Snowboard 2019-2020

    Utilising Rome’s Fusion Camber profile, The Warden has a small early-rise rocker zone in the tip and tail. This slight rocker will help to keep the board surfing along nicely when you’re off the beaten track, rather than you leaning so far back your back leg feels like it’s been chewed off. The rocker will also mellow up the board a little by stopping it from catching its edges so easily.

    A softer flexing model, it’ll be perfect for newer riders to build up confidence, with the ability to push themselves as they progress. It’s not a ‘beginner board’ that you’ll outgrow after a week of riding.     Salomon Assassin Pro Snowboard 2019-2020

    Introducing the premium version of the all-mountain ace, the Salomon Assassin, it’s the Assassin Pro. This is truly a weapon. To the untrained eye, there might be not much to distinguish between the two Assassins but the Pro is the beefy meathead brother.

    Just like its namesake, the Assassin Pro also carries a camrock profile, directional twin shape and quadralized side cuts. What tells these two apart, in the main, is the core. The Assassin Pro’s core is made out of lightweight paulownia, a core type that Salomon likes to call the Ghost Green Core. Paulownia is one of the newer woods used for snowboard manufacturing, and one of its signature traits is that it is light yet strong.

    Salomon Gypsy Women’s Snowboard 2019-2020
