Jones Nomad Pro 2019-2020 Splitboard Skins Review

Why we chose the Jones Jones Nomad Pro Splitboard Skins:The ultimate all-condition, all-weather splitboard skins.

While a slip ’n’ slide might bring back fond memories of innocent youthfulness and school summer holidays, it can spell disaster when out touring in the backcountry. The Jones Nomad Pro Skins are all about grip ’n’ glide. Although not ideal, most splitboard enthusiasts will probably get away with a bent pair of poles, a dried-out base, or a temperamental binding buckle for a day in the backcountry. A sub-standard pair of skins, on the other hand, could leave you having to curtail your mission and make the long trudge back in bounds.

As the higher performing of the two offerings in the line, the Nomad Pros are built to work in any temperature and snow condition. Jones have collaborated with industry leaders, Pomoca, and called upon their Swiss skinning expertise for producing these ones.

“As the higher performing of the two offerings in the line, the Nomad Pros are built to work in any temperature and snow condition”

There’s a blend of 70% mohair and 30% synthetic nylon within the skins. The higher mohair density keeps the skins gliding effectively, while the nylon works to repel wetter snow and keeps the skin drier, for longer. Providing you’re not the kind of splitboarder who dons the lycra for the dawn patrol, you’ll get on well with these.

No real surprise as the product from the founder Protect Our Winters, but the Jones skins are Bluesign approved and PFC-free, so the only trace you’ll be leaving is your skin track in the snow. Alongside Anti-glopping treatment (sounding more like something you’d administer to a toddler with a blocked nose) and Glide Tech treatment, the Pros continue to break trail with ease through to end of season spring lines. By laminating them with a rubber backer, they’ve increased the water repellency and durability further.

“Your days in the backcountry will be all the more hassle-free, with enough grip to keep you ascending just about every snow surface short of bulletproof ice”

You can opt for two different variations of the Nomad Pro Skins. For those with a 2016 or later Jones Splitboard, the pre-cut, Quick Tension Tail Clip version will be the least hassle. These are ordered to size and have a simple clip that slots into the compatible tail notch on Jones splits to get perfect skin tension in a matter of seconds. However, for everyone else, the Trim-To-Fit Universal Tail Clip option is your best bet, which comes with a Pomoca skin cutting tool. With either option, your days in the backcountry will be all the more hassle-free, with enough grip to keep you ascending just about every snow surface short of bulletproof ice.

Trade Secrets

Nick Russell – Ambassador, Jones

“Nothing worse than dealing with failing skins in the backcountry. At best you waste time and at worst you have to walk out to the trailhead. The Nomad Pro skins are the most dependable skins I’ve ever used. The glue works great in all temperatures and the glide to grip ratio is perfectly balanced. They’ll climb up anything short of pure ice and you can get a good nordic stride going when skinning the flats.”
