When you think snowboard jackets, Ortovox isn’t probably the first brand to cross your mind (they’re a bit ‘skiing’). However, the Ortovox 3L Guardian Shell is a technical jacket made for freeriding, which is why it works equally well for exploring the backcountry on a split board as it does on skis.

When faced with high peaks and steep couloirs it isn’t just important that you’ve got the right gear, but also that you have got the right kind of outerwear to take you through any unexpected weather changes you may encounter. This is why Ortovox has used the Toray Dermizax membrane for the Guardian Jacket. It ranks high in waterproofing, breathability and durability – and also prevents the wind from getting through.

For added comfort the 4-way-stretch 3L shell has a full layer of merino wool on the inside, meaning you can go hike and ride for a full day without the shell rubbing on your skin (something which will eventually result in serious discomfort).

A natural product like Merino wool isn’t only adding to the jacket’s comfort, it’s also a great way to regulate your temperature. When engaging in more strenuous activities like hiking steep peaks, your body heat starts to rise. This usually means that you need to ease up on the layering. Thanks to merino wools natural wicking abilities though, the sweat starts to evaporate through the shell into the air – leaving you dry as a result.

New for this season, Ortovox has also upgraded their seams and made them more long-lasting ones. As for other features, the jacket has a 2-way adjustable helmet-compatible storm hood, two front pockets big enough to fit larger items in and underarm ventilation when in need of that extra bit of cooling breeze.
