Why we chose the Nidecker Kaon-X Snowboard Bindings:The price tag is firmly entry level, but the performance is anything but.

Your bindings are the essential interface between you and your snowboard, but despite their importance they’re often overlooked. But not with the Nidecker Kaon-X. This new all-terrain binder takes decades of Nidecker’s experience and know how, and packs it all into an enticing price point package.

As usual, Nidecker have brought their A Game with the Kaon-X, it’s a specc’d down little sibling to their premium Kaon-CX. Sharing much of the same DNA, this is the option for those who don’t want to blow their whole budget on a pair of bindings but refuse to compromise on quality.

The N1 Series baseplate offers an off-axis flex pattern, with more power being driven to the toe and heel edge for a really versatile ride. Most people don’t ride with their bindings flat out 0-0, so Nidecker have designed the Kaon-X to work better when they’re mounted at an angle.

Both the toe and ankle strap use a malleable, form fitting design. Built to wrap around your boot and lock it in, rather than pressurising the top of the foot. They’re lightweight and easy to use, with durable aluminium ratchets.

“The Kaon-X is compatible with all major mounting systems with a single disc”

Knee pain can be a real pain in the … knee. Nidecker have canted the footbed on the Kaon- X 2.5 degrees to allow your foot to sit it at a slight angle. This allows your ankle, knees and hips to align, especially when you’re rocking a wider stance, giving more power transmission into ollies, presses and turns.

The asymmetric highback follows the anatomical shape of your leg, with a higher angle on the lateral side for increased power transfer. It sits on top of a rigid glass filled nylon heelcup, which is super durable and sturdy.

The Kaon-X is compatible with all major mounting systems with a single disc, whether you’re rocking 2×4, 4×4, 3HP, or Channel, you’ll be hot to trot with this little bobby dazzler.

If you’re looking for one binding to do it all without breaking the bank, the Nidecker Kaon-X is definitely one to keep your eyes on. It’s as happy cruising the pistes as it is tweaking in the park, all for a super reasonable price.

Tester Verdict 2020/21

Andrew Duthie – Whitelines Contributor

It wasn’t that long ago that Nidecker bindings came across as a bit of an afterthought – but if proof were needed of how times have changed, you’ll find it here. The chassis of the Kaon X is responsive enough for all but the most mentally irregular hellmen out there. At the same time, the highbacks actually have a decent amount of give in them, so when you want to mess about, it won’t feel like you’re fighting your fixtures. It’s a winning combination.

“In reality, the Kaon X does everything you need it to do, at a price that’s almost unbelievable”

While it doesn’t make sense to base your choice on how easy it is to adjust the straps, it’s a piece of cake when the time does come. Pull, slide, push, done. The straps themselves are a minimalist delight with zero pressure points, and foot fatigue was never an issue.

Everything could probably be a bit lighter, a bit fancier, a bit techier, if you wanted to nitpick… but in reality, the Kaon X does everything you need it to do, at a price that’s almost unbelievable.
