Burton Malavita 2019-2020 Snowboard Bindings Review

A living legend within the Burton binding family – the Burton Malavitas. This pair has been around for nearly a decade now and during its years on the market it’s become a favourite amongst many snow loving mavericks out there.

The Malavitas provide a consistent response and a good feel for whatever terrain you’re looking to ride. The reinforced rubber material at the heel edge is created to adjust according to your boot, providing even further response to your ride.

“With a baseplate made only out of one material, the Malavita’s will assure a consistent response and a good feel for whatever terrain you’re looking to ride”

The Supergrip Capstrap 2.0 toe strap is made out of two different materials – a firmer one in the spine to provide support, and a softer over-molded material to wrap around the boot. The strap adjusts to the boot instantly so a very comfortable ride is well within your reach.

Celebrating the Malavita’s nearly decade-long existence, Burton’s introduced a leather version of the bindings – something that’ll please riders who like their bindings to stand out a bit more. The leather Malavitas, just like with the normal ones, also come in Re:Flex and EST versions – satisfying the needs of both the Burton devotees and the mix-and-matchers.

These bad boys can handle speed well, and are sure to give you a good time. Since the Malavitas are slightly stiffer than your average medium flex, they’ll provide a responsive yet forgiving ride. However, they are slightly softer compared to Burton’s other favourite, the Cartel bindings. So if stiff is what you’re looking for, give the Cartels a look.

Tester’s Verdict

“I usually ride with Cartels, so the Malavita doesn’t feel too far from home for me. I’ve been a long-time fan of Burton bindings. They might not be as cool as Union, they may have less customising options than Rome, they may not have any tech as unique as NOW but, for me, they do exactly what I want a good pair of bindings to do – to feel like they don’t even exist.

The Malavita comes in just a smidgen softer than the Cartel which felt like a welcome change. I was so used to the snappy response of my own set, that I felt the Malavita’s offered so much more forgiveness for tweaking out grabs or slashing banks. Moving to the outer limits of the snowboard without feeling yourself being snapped back to the centre of the baseplate will appeal to a wide range of riding style and abilities.

“The highbacks are great. That hammock grabs a hold of you, so the boots and bindings can move more effectively in unison with each other”

The highbacks are great. That hammock grabs a hold of you, so the boots and bindings can move more effectively in unison with each other.

The straps are minimal, but for my money, I think Burton makes the best heel straps in the game. Even the new-ish toe strap grips a lot better than their previous incarnations.

The double-take buckles are a gimmick and one that Burton would do well to get rid of altogether. I’ve never found it fastens any quicker or holds my boots in place any better. Actually, I’ve found there are just more grooves for snow to build up in and occasionally prevent them from clicking tight. Also, the buckle is substantially bigger, no doubt adding to the overall weight, and just a bit of a brute I’d prefer not to have hitting off my top sheet when I’m strapping in.

It’s a small complaint, though. They still work fine and don’t overshadow what is a really versatile all-mountain binding. Soft enough to play around, stiff enough from heel to toe to charge, and comfy and durable enough to rack up hundreds of days’ riding on.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

Dave Crozierrealsnowboarding.co.uk

“For a lot of riders, the Malavitas are the best snowboard bindings they have bought – for me I just think ‘yeah,OK, cool’. I like simple bindings with simple screws and simple systems – but for me, the design of these is complicated and hides how simple a binding can be with pure style and minimal design.

Burton is a clever company and it does make bindings that last a long time, therefore I can’t fault these bindings in terms of reliability. I do wish they would stop messing around with features like netting on the high-backs and coming up with different ways to sell a base plate. ‘Keep It Simple Stupid’ as they say.

With this whole eco-friendly boost Burton is pushing then why not save some plastic, minimise the design and get rid of the all the unnecessary plastic? just a thought.”
