Burton Cartel 2019-2020 Snowboard Bindings Review

The Cartel remains unchanged for another season – and with good reason. The Burton Cartel bindings have made quite a name for themselves on the market. Year after year devoted fans find themselves going back to these beauts, so why would you change anything when there clearly isn’t anything to change?

With a slightly stiffer flex, the Cartels might be better suited for more experienced riders. However, this binding is an all-mountain machine so you can pretty much adapt it to any kind of terrain.

The highbacks are easily adjustable thanks to Burton’s tool-free dial system. If you’re looking for a quicker edge to edge response, increasing the forward lean of the bindings is a piece of cake. Not only are the highbacks easily adjustable, they’re also extremely comfy and provide great response.

The shock dampening baseplates ensure you can charge your way through anything and everything. They also adjust your feet into a natural position, resulting in increased comfort and reduced fatigue.

As with most of Burton’s bindings, the Cartels come in two different editions – the Re:Flex and EST. The Re:Flex bindings are compatible with all the major snowboard mounting systems out there, while the EST ones are only compatible with Burton’s own Channel system.

Tester’s Verdict

“A couple of new additions in the upgraded capstrap and buckles help keep this binder up to date for the new year. But you still get the overall impression of a no nonsense, no fuss bit of kit – the Cartel’s do exactly what they should.

Flipback straps are still one of their most useful features, and the evolved capstrap definitely gives the impression it’ll hug any kind of boot. Elsewhere the lack of hassle just leaves you to get on with the fun of riding without any kind of hindrance.”

“It’s hard to know what to say about Cartels that hasn’t already been said. Like their namesake it seems like they’ve been here forever, and have no intention of going away any time soon – relentlessly holding onto control of their portion of the binding market and scaring off many strong competitors along the way.

“These are a bit more drivey than some of the options around, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you like a softer feel”

You could mill around a tonne of different options and still not come away with a binding that hits this spot as well as Cartels do. Responsive, comfortable, easy to step into (thanks to those flip back straps), and while we had variable weather and plenty of snow on the day of testing, I never had a problem with snow clogging. Pair that up with the Channel setup speed, and you’re at about as hassle free a point as traditional bindings can be.

As always, these are a bit more drivey than some of the options around, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you like a softer feel, but on a mid-flex powder board, with the whole mountain begging to be plundered, the Cartels didn’t disappoint.”

“Our best selling binding since forever, the Burton Cartel is super comfortable with a medium-stiff flex. It provides great response without being too twitchy.

Industry-eading ratchets let you crank the straps up just right, and the toe cap-strap is well shaped to grip the front of your boot without popping off. Of the two options, the Re:Flex is my favourite, even when riding Burton boards.

It uses a baseplate with a foam centre rather than a solid plastic base, so it allows the board to have a truer flex pattern. It may have sneaked up in price over the last few years, but it remains a winner regardless.”
