Why we chose the Ortovox Diract Voice Transceiver Backcountry Equipment Review: This new avalanche transceiver is one of the most intuitive and easy to use beacons we’ve ever tested. And it works like no other on the market.

Before you say it, don’t worry, we know… A transceiver isn’t an accessory but a //requirement// when venturing into the backcountry. Secondly, it only forms one component of an essential three-part system that also includes a shovel and probe. Third – and most importantly – the “best” transceiver out there is of course the one that you’re most practiced in using.

With all those caveats in mind, let us introduce to you the new Diract Voice Transceiver from German-based backcountry experts, Ortovox. This extremely innovative and intuitive beeper provides the user with clear instructions, spoken out loud, through every phase of the rescue.

Given the pressure someone is likely to feel when faced with the situation of a companion rescue in the backcountry (see Torgeir Bergrem’s close shave earlier in this issue), it’s understandable that all your practice may fly out of the window in the heat of the moment. There’s some pretty convincing science supporting the argument that people react more effectively to voice rather than visual commands in a crisis, and with spoken instructions like: “Run straight”, “Keep right” and “Go down to the snow’s surface”, the Diract Voice guides you in at every stage of the search.

Of course, this is still backed up with a large screen and very intuitive interface so you can check the instructions visually for confirmation (or if you find yourself in conditions where it’s not as easy to hear) but we found the clarity of the voice guidance to be very straightforward.

New for this model is the in-built battery which replaces AA and AAA alternatives, and which will power the device in temperatures as low as -20°C. Ortovox claim this battery can easily surpass 200 hours of life in transmit mode, and it’s extremely easy to charge at home, in the car, or even out in the field if you’ve brought a power bank with you.

Of course, no amount of technology can ever substitute avalanche avoidance and regular rescue training, but when every second counts, a device as intuitive and reliable as the Diract Voice could make all the difference.
