Companies come and go in snowboarding pretty regularly. Brands launch in a blaze of publicity, backed by loans and carried along on a wave of optimism only to slip under quietly a couple of years later as sales fail to live up to expectations, products don’t take off like they should and lenders come a-calling. The list of such companies is long, and includes names that no-one would ever have believed could fail. Airwalk boots anyone? A Morrow snowboard? Or how about a Arcus tee? Sadly, the list of brands that have managed to successfully re-launch after such a crash is shorter. Much shorter. In fact, we can really only think of A Snowboards, or Apo as they are now. So we were pretty chuffed to see at this year’s tradeshows that another illustrious name from the past is being resurrected in the shape of Arnette Goggles. Yep, the American-based company is doing a full-blown Lazarus impression and launching a brand new line of snow goggles this season, complete with its famous winged ‘A’ logo on the strap.
Not only are they releasing two new models – the Series 3 and the Mercenary – they’ve also signed up a brand new team to rock their eye protection. Alongside the legend that is Devun Walsh, they’ve got moustachioed jib-whizz Zac Marben, Capita’s badman Dustin Craven and double corking contest-kid Sage Kotsenburg on the team. That list of names alone should prove that this is no half-arsed attempt at a relaunch. Nope, like the reformed Iron Maiden embarking on their umpteenth tour of Japan, these boys mean business. So whether you’re an older shred-dog looking to re-live the glory days or a newcomer to A love, if you’re buying new goggs this season, these are well worth a look-in.
