While the competitive circuit isn’t without its critics, even those who have no time for judged runs and scoreboards have a soft spot for Stale. Along with his countryman Torstein Horgmo, he’s living proof that there can be more to top contest riders than just medal-chasing.
Across big air and slopestyle he’s bagged four X Games medals in three years, most recently scoring a silver in 2015 (which some felt deserved to have been gold). He is also one of the most successful riders ever on the TTR/WST circuit, winning the overall title in 2011/12 and 2013/14. In the 2014 Olympics he grabbed silver – while that’s something that reduces some sportsmen to tears, not so for Stale. He dicked around for the cameras with gold medalist Sage Kotsenburg while the rest of the riders were still to drop, and turned up to the medal ceremony sporting a massive mohawk in tribute to Heikki Sorsa.
He’s also the subject of his own web series, Station To Station, and films regularly with the always-ace RK1 crew. He also put down a stormer of a part for Oakley’s Snowboarding For Me. When you see him ride, it’s little wonder that so many cameras get pointed in his direction.
