The Café Racer is KORUA’s carving missile. Built for turning, burning and churning up the groomers. Just about every snowboard to come out of Nicholas Wolken and Stephan Maurer’s line is designed for life on the edge, but this one is for the purists out there.

The directional tapered shape is loaded up with a full camber between the contact points. Turn initiation feels super smooth but, within a matter of seconds, the snowboard pulls you into the vortex. KORUA’s carving specific sidecut locks you in and ploughs through just about every kind of snow condition. And with the additional width underfoot there’s minimal chance of having your heels or toes dragging along the surface when you’re getting your lean on.

They haven’t just tapered the shape but made the tail stiffer, too. As a result, steering through the back-foot and squeezing those last few degrees out of the arc should come easily to those in the know. There’s still plenty going on up at the helm, too, though. The elongated, pointy tip helps keep you pushed up in the deep stuff so, like the rest of the red and white fleet, its limits extend far beyond the piste.

With a full poplar core and biax fibreglass layers, the Café Racer comes charged up with plenty of life inside, without all the bells and whistles that ultimately add to the overall weight of a snowboard. They’ve specced it up where it’s needed the most, though, fitting the underside with a super-fast 2000 sintered base.

New for last year, the Café Racer now comes in a smaller, women’s specific 144 size, spreading the carving revolution to the masses.

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

“If carving is your game the Café Racer will be a good friend to you.  This board is pretty damn big to be honest, I’m 5’8 and a only 60kgs so I kind of looked like I was snowboarding on a door. That being said, the 159cm shape actually rides like a much smaller board. This is due to the enormous pointy nose.  This board is built for carving and boy its good at what it’s built for.

It looks dauntingly wide at first but is actually easy to get over onto its edges and, once it’s there, it keeps railing and doesn’t let go. As standard, it comes with the usual, fast, bright red base that Korua is known for, which I’ve always found pretty durable and easy to repair.

Undoubtedly the Café Racer would be pretty sick off-piste, the early rise in that mega-sized nose is sure to float above the snow on even the deepest day. The piste control is great and I even found it easy to navigate bumps and uneven terrain on. Landings in switch are actually fairly easy but this is not the type of board you want to be riding switch for a long time on.

The Café Racer is a dedicated carving and powder board. If you’re looking to extend your quiver and get a more specific carving and pow charger then this is a very good choice. I’m sure if there was some type of magical spiral-shaped piste you could strap in at the top and lock in a euro carve the entire way down to the chair lift.”
