Burton Deep Thinker 2020-2021 Snowboard Review

The Free Thinker and the Deep Thinker complement each other perfectly, like Danny Davis’ own personal yin and yang. Prise open your third eye, open your mind and clear your perceptions, the Deep Thinker is shifting the paradigm of what a class beating freeride snowboard can offer.

It’s important to realise that while the Free Thinker and the Deep Thinker are brothers, they’re not twins. They share some playful characteristics with one another, but they’re by no means two of a kind. If you’re having any doubts about which is which, the clue is in the name, but as that old chestnut Billy Shakespeare said, “What’s in a name?” It’s the directional shape of the Deep Thinker that immediately lets you know its stomping ground, the big old nose and crescent tail marking it out as a snowboard built for life charging, both on and off the beaten track.

A backseat camrock is one of the most fun profiles you can take onto hardpack groomers. All the power coming from the rear of the board, slashing and pumping turns and railing the edge right up until the crescendo. Scooping up into a pronounced rocker at the front not only makes it float with ease in the deep snow, but when the camber is weighted the nose lifts even further, smoothing out your turn initiation for a super surfy feel. Add Burton’s Frostbite Edges and carbon infused laminates into the mix, and you’ve got a snowboard that’ll hold an edge and dig trenches with the best of them.

When you get this badboy into the steep and deep it’s a point and shoot kinda deal. The directional shape, tapered outline and setback stance are doing most of the heavy lifting, leaving you free and clear to scout out pillows, hips and lips. Everything about the Deep Thinker is engineered to float with little to no effort required. You’ve got backcountry and you’ve got freestyle, and then you’ve got backcountry freestyle. Burton have shaved precious grams in the tip and tail to make it easier to control and manoeuvre the Deep Thinker in the air. With the dynamic profile boosting you off features, you’ll be glad for soft powder landings when you’re dialling in new moves.

Pop the hood and you’ll find Burton’s FSC Certified Super Fly II Core, clocking in at a cool 700grams and kitted out with their Dualzone EGD and Squeezebox technology. The core has been manipulated to drive power to the toe and heel edge, and outside the bindings for extra response, control, and explosive pop.

“You’ve got backcountry and you’ve got freestyle, and then you’ve got backcountry freestyle”

If you’re wanting something that’s more at home tearing up the pipe or throwing down between the park ropes, check out the Free Thinker, but if you’ve whet your whistle dreaming of snorkel season and nipples down eurocarves then the Deep Thinker is gonna blow your knickers off.

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

“Exactly what you would expect from a Danny Davis pro model.

“Exactly what you would expect from a Danny Davis pro model”

This board was very poppy and playful for an all mountain board with a heavy freestyle influence. Super easy to butter and play with because of the directional camber mixed in with a solid mix-flexing core.

Once you hit the pow and want to charge a bit more this bad boy is right there with you laying in those slashes and and giving you the picture perfect rooster tail only the pros seem to get.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

“The topsheet of the Deep Thinker makes you feel like you are wearing a brand new jacket from JD sports, with all the blue and yellow trimmings – whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you really…

Aesthetics aside, when I came to ride the Deep thinker it was strong and powerful on the piste. It also had an element of agility that I couldn’t ignore when it came to riding the fresh snow we had been graced with that week.

“The Deep Thinker was strong and powerful on the piste”

It was perfect conditions to admire the strengths of the Deep Thinker, which has obviously had some good thought put into it. The rockered nose gives you a nice gliding feeling as you go from edge to edge.

You can’t just let this board take you for a cruise though; I felt like despite the agreeable profile I couldn’t let my guard down with this. Not a problem, though; the design elements are there for someone who knows how take advantage of them, and charge until they’re out of breath.

An addictive board, to say the least.”

“I had a blast on this board. The day I rode it was a day after a fresh dump of snow, so there were both fresh patches and tracked out areas. but I didn’t really notice the difference as this thing just charged through it all with ease.

“It was a lot lighter and nimbler than I had anticipated”

Blasting off side hits and cliff drops felt like a breeze with this board as it was a lot lighter and nimbler than I had anticipated. Edge to edge was smooth and stable, giving a little confidence boost when pinning it down the pistes and laying out big carves.

The only thing I could really fault it on was that it was a little on the stiffer side than I’d personally enjoy, and would be a little lacklustre on a rail line, but thats nit-picking. Besides, it’s not what it was designed for!”
