Jones | 2020 – 2021 Snowboard Product Preview

A first look at next season's snowboard gear

To be fair, nobody would judge Jeremy Jones if he decided to sit back and rest on his laurels by now. Both the man and his brand have possibly contributed more to the snowboard industry than any other in the last ten years, from sustainability to product innovation, to drastically lowering the barriers for backcountry entry.

“Stagnation is not an option”, Jeremy writes his opening passage of this year’s product catalogue. The 2020/21 season will prove especially fruitful for fans of Jones snowboard gear. Innovations and evolutions are apparent right thought the line – solids, splits, bindings and even backcountry accessories have all been taken into consideration.

The all-new Stratos snowboard turned heads at every trade show and test event this season. On the surface, it looks like an out-and-out directional freeride deck; in reality, it’s packed full of freestyle credentials so you can butter and jib your way between powder stashes.

That’s not all for the newcomers. Two new ‘Ultra’ models – the Ultra Flagship and Ultra Solution splitboard – deliver top-of-the-line freeride and backcountry performance. Intermediates need not apply, these ones mean business.

All solid boards for 2020/21 from Jones will feature 3D Contour Base profiling.  Combined with a redesigned shape, the immensely popular Mountain Twin series are likely to be big hitters for the coming season. The new blunt nose and tail, as well as the centred stance on the contact points, give the boards even more freestyle kudos but with enough power and options to set the stance back for charging deeper lines.

And for all the splitboarders out there, take heed: the Solution (the model that arguably catapulted splitboarding into the mainstream) gets a full overhaul for next season. We’re eating our words, after only 10 months ago suggesting that not even the Jones boffins could construct a splitboard with a 3D base profile, they’ve gone and done it. Additionally, the increased taper equips it for even deeper powder days, and it still remains one of the most sustainably built splitboards on the market. Win, win, win.

Mum and Dad might also need to start saving for Christmas a little earlier this year. Jones are introducing two new youth models for the 2020/21 season: the Flagship Youth and Solution Split Youth. No doubt seeing the progression in his own kids’ riding, Jeremy has upped the ante for mini-rippers who genuinely ride demanding terrain and are ready to tackle some bigger backcountry days with the grownups.

Both Jones binding models – the Mercury and Apollo – get some nifty upgrades too. The Mercury now features a re-designed ‘Control Flex’  highback which features stiffer support down the centre with softer flexing winged sides for added freestyle feel. All toe straps now come equipped with 3D Aux Tech which seems to be quickly catching on as the go-to design for slip-free straps. Lastly, the Apollo (the stiffer, more aggressive of the two models) comes with a new triple-density footbed, designed to maximise comfort and minimize foot fatigue.
