Anon WM1 2018-2019 Women’s Snowboard Goggles Review

F*ckin' magnets, how do they work?

Yes, perhaps the idea of gender-specific goggles is a dubious one, but there’s no denying that, on the whole, women’s heads are smaller than men’s. If you’re after all the same tech but in a less sizeable frame – and a colourway selection that skews a little more towards ‘traditional’ female-focused design – then the Anon WM1 snowboard goggles are worth a look.

Key to their enduring popularity is the ‘Magna-Tech’ lens changing system. Each lens is anchored to the frame with 14 magnets, which won’t fail even if you fall out of a helicopter and tomahawk down a 50-degree pitch.

At the same time, changing the lens is very simple; just squeeze the frame in a specific way (it’s self-explanatory once you’ve had a go) and hey presto, out it pops. Then just get the new one anywhere near the frame, and the magnets will do the rest. Click!

Pay a little extra and the Anon WM1 goggles also come with a magnetic face mask, which attaches to the bottom of the frame to create an impenetrable seal over your skin. It’s much more effective and reliable than trying to tuck a neck tube or bandana under your goggles, and perforations directly in front of your mouth prevent fogging.

The lens itself uses tech called ‘Sonar’, developed with the optical specialists at Zeiss. Belonging to the new generation of high-contrast, high-clarity lenses (see also: Dragon’s Lumalens, Oakley’s Prizm), the performance is hard to fault.

If you’re a fan of their size and style, the Anon WM1 goggles are the complete package.

Tester’s Verdict

“But I already have a pair of Anons,” is what I thought when I was sent out to test a pair of the WM1 goggles. Granted, mine are from 2006 and were the first item of snowboard gear I bought, but it just goes to show the longevity of that brand’s products.

“The magnetic facemask attachment is an absolute game-changer”

I like my 2006 Anons, but these…. well, they were vision-changing. The magnetic lens technology means you can take out the lenses and change them within seconds. Plus the magnetic facemask attachment which clips just under the nose is an absolute game-changer – no more faff!

The biggest win factor for me was these goggles fit my face shape, something unique to us all, and were comfortable. If they suit you just as well, they’ll allow for a day of seeing clearly with no procrastination or fuss – only fun shred times”

“I had no idea what to expect when being told to put these on, and then suddenly it all just clicked, literally. There is a magnet that attaches the facemask with the goggles and honestly, it does work.

“Suddenly it all just clicked, literally”

I was pleasantly surprised at how it actually keeps the mask attached to the goggles really well – it didn’t fall off once. The mask was also easy for me to breathe through, and didn’t get annoyingly moist or give me a feeling of claustrophobic suffocation (yes, it is a thing).

I was wearing these during a non-sunny powder day, and the lens I was equipped with was not really ideal for this kind of weather, but the model of the goggles felt really good on my face.

All in all, the goggles and their clicky magnet system are really good.”
