Shaun White overcomes faceplant drama to win X-Games pipe Gold

Double corks’s and drama unfortunately seem to go hand in hand. With Kevin Pearce still laid up in hospital in a serious state following his accident in Utah practicing a double in December.

Saturday night’s Superpipe Final proved once more the dangers surrounding this treacherous trick, with Shaun White injuring himself 45 minutes prior to the final. Catching his head on the lip of the pipe, practicing his new trademark-created-in-his-own-backyard-halfpipe-courtesy-of-sponsors super trick – the double McTwist 1260, Shaun’s helmet was flung off by the force of the knock, causing a head banging collision with the monster 22 foot pipe.

Thankfully, following a 15 minute assessment by medics (which in retrospect caused contraversy with experts say that this was not sufficient time to assess Shaun’s injuries) Shaun was ready to rock again. And rock it he did, with the multiple medal untouchable hitting a ridiculous 23 foot method air in his first run, followed by back to back doublecork 1080s, a 540, and then rounded off with that old chestnut, the double mctwist 1260. A score of 95.33 added another gold to Shaun’s expansive collection.

Shaun, Iouri and Kazuhiro take to the podium

Not far behind was Swiss shredder Iouri Podladtchikov, the 21 year old goofy footed silver medalist who scored a 93.66 after stomping (deep breath) a cab double cork 1080, a frontside 540, a backside 900, a frontside 1080, followed by a cab 720, with the cherry on top a frontside double cork 1080. Japanese rider and bronze medalist Kazuhiro Kokubo demonstrated once more with a score of 93.00, that he is a serious force to be reckoned with.
