Shaun White has done it once again, whipping out a trademark huuuuge halfpipe run over the weekend and blowing away the competition to claim his fourth X Games gold in a row. Yep, in case you hadn’t realised, this was the weekend of the US X Games in Aspen (officially known as Winter X 15 by the organisers) and they persuaded the ginger wonder to come out and compete for the occasion. And damn was it worth it! There had been a lot of chat about Shaun’s move to tight trousers and his all-black Burton outfit before the contest, but in the end, it was his riding that did the talking.
Not that it didn’t take a bit of drama to get there. Earlier in the weekend, Shaun had failed to make the cut in the slopestyle comp, leaving him out of the final and with something to prove. After a slightly lack-lustre first run in the pipe, Shaun was sitting in second, with Scotty Lago’s score of 92 putting him at the top of the leader-board. Scotty was riding with a wired-up jaw after he mashed his face in a recent slam, but it didn’t seem to stop him rinsing out. It wasn’t quite good enough in the end though, and Shaun being Shaun, he pulled it out of the bag, throwing down the run you can see above to take the gold – with a frankly insane score of 97.33! Louie Vito, who had ridden strongly first time round, fell on his second run and was sitting down in fifth before a bangin’ final attempt got him the third place on the podium. Meanwhile Kazu Kokubo, whose run was a big and steezy as ever, ended up in fifth behind Markus Malin – a result that many (including Todd Richards on Twitter) thought was a little bit harsh…
