Nidecker Mellow 2018-2019 Snowboard Review

The Nidecker Mellow snowboard features a similar level of tech to the Escape, and therefore comes in at a very attractive price. However, if you prefer powder to pina coladas, then this would be the better of the two options.

The big difference, obviously, is the shape. This could have someone’s eye out, but as long as you don’t get carried away then you’ve got a terrific backcountry vehicle. There’s only the most minimal of tapers, but the overall nose and tail shape are idea for float. Both ends are inspired by a fish surfboard, as you may have already guessed.

The profile puts a powerful camber bend at your back foot, and an extended rocker section up front. Staying on top of the stashes therefore takes less effort, and holding a strong edge through the carves of firmer snow is a piece of cake too.

While the Nidecker Mellow is mainly for the deep days, it’s stiff and responsive enough for a good razz on the groomers too. Having said that, the biax fibreglass is easier to manipulate than the triax equivalent, so working the board through the waist is easily done. At slower speeds it’s the perfect cruiser, and when things get a bit rough over choppy terrain the ash topsheet helps to keep things, well, mellow.

Below that sits Nidecker’s ‘Master’ core, which uses no less than four different species of wood to ensure the mellow is both lightweight and strong.

And while the core may not feature any carbon additives (a deliberate move to best suit the Mellow’s personality), there’s some present in the sintered base for an additional speed boost.

Given its versatility, plus the relatively low price, the Nidecker Mellow is one of the best-value snowboards of this winter. If you’re a surfer at heart, you’ll struggle to find a better stick.

Tester’s Verdict

Dan Wilsonsnowfit.co.uk

“With so many brands offering a ‘surf’ inspired option I was keen to see where the Nidecker Mellow would sit alongside some of the more flamboyant options flying around. With its smooth wood finish and an appealing price point, my interest was immediately piqued.

The Mellow series is very much living up to its name; it’s such a laid-back option and really lends itself to that freeride spirit. If you want to get those surfy slashes and whip in and around some trees, you’ll be loving this board.

As a wider option you can afford to ride it shorter, and this only adds to the fun factor. Don’t let it fool you though – even through crud and harder groomers this won’t let up, and you could easily lay down some sweet carves.

Being such a versatile and easy board to ride, I can’t see anyone not having a good time on this. A welcome addition to any quiver.”
