While there are a few welcome tweaks in the shape (such as in the sidecut radius and overall width), the Jones Women’s Mind Expander has everything the ‘men’s’ version does, from the tip of its gigantic nose to its short, stubby tail. And that’s very good news for women looking to escape the norm.

Who Is The Jones Women’s Mind Expander For?

‘Alternative freeride’ is how Jones categorises this one. In plain English that means this won’t exactly be the top choice of someone who favours a conventional blast down a gnarly face, but will instead make sidecountry adventures feel just as thrilling as a call-up to the Natural Selection course.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The Jones Women’s Mind Expander’s reputation for creative riding derives mainly from three things. One: the setback rocker profile, inspired by surfing and very compatible with loosey-goosey, seat-of-your-pants riding. Two: the tight sidecut which allows you to turn on a ten-pence-piece, with extra grip delivered by protrusions along the edge to make up for the lack of camber. Three: that unique shape, which is a little wider to let you take a shorter length, and has so much nose that you’d have a better chance of sinking in the Dead Sea.

“Even though it boasts a little extra waist width, the Jones Women’s Mind Expander is still easy enough to manipulate with your feet, thanks to the lightweight core and biax fibreglass”

Construction and Materials

Even though it boasts a little extra waist width, the Jones Women’s Mind Expander is still easy enough to manipulate with your feet, thanks to the lightweight core and biax fibreglass. It’s not a total noodle, however, with bamboo, flax and basalt stringers delivering some added response. The combination of profile and shape may take a little getting used to, but the process of deliberately over-building the board before methodically ‘breaking it in’ at the factory means that it’ll feel like an old favourite from day one, and keep its characteristics for longer.

“If you’re expecting to ride a decent amount of either powder or slush this year, then the Jones Women’s Mind Expander is something you should definitely be looking at”

Roundup

If you’re expecting to ride a decent amount of either powder or slush this year, then the Jones Women’s Mind Expander is something you should definitely be looking at. Surfers in particular will love it, but as the name suggests, anyone with the right attitude can get on with this one.
