No one is happier than us to see that short ‘n’ stubby boards were no passing fad. The Jones Storm Chaser sits in a relatively recent but noble tradition of ‘volume shifted’ models that have allowed us all to look at freeriding differently. In a crowded field, this remains a top-tier choice.

Who Is The Jones Storm Chaser For?

We don’t expect anyone to have only the Jones Storm Chaser in their board bag, so those looking for a daily driver should move along. However, if you’re expecting a lot of powder in your life – especially the kind that sits in silence among the trees, waiting to be dug out by lucky souls – then get this in your quiver.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

There’s basically no tail on this thing, which will take some getting used to if you’re usually one for directional twins. Once you suss it out, however, it’s incredibly satisfying to turn on a ten-pence-piece in the deep stuff, pointing that formidable nose wherever you please.

Given that it’s not really one for carving anyway, Jones has gone for a full rocker profile with this one, so you won’t be going over the handlebars unless you’re actively seeking a payout from You’ve Been Framed. Naturally it’s a bit wider than average in order to obtain enough surface area for good float, but that’s another thing that’s fine once it clicks.

Construction and Materials

More so than conventional shapes, a board like the Jones Storm Chaser has to get the balance between stiff and soft just right. The core is softer between the feet and sandwiched between layers of mellow biax fibreglass, so it’s not too much of a chore to manipulate it through the waist. At the same time, it’s powerful enough to be ridden aggressively when you hit your flow state, with stringers (made from naturally occurring plant and mineral fibres) taking care of unwanted chatter. The super-fast sintered base also helps you squeeze every drop out of its short running length.

Roundup

No rider should be seduced by a head-turning shape, but in the case of the Jones Storm Chaser, what’s on offer is so much more than that. If you surf, love powder, or are just ready for something a little different, this one delivers. Just don’t take it out every day, lest you ruin the magic.
