CAPiTA’s The Equalizer is a no frills, no fuss, premium freeride snowboard, built for big mountain destruction. The pro model of CAPiTA OG Jess Kimura, who spent much of her career dominating in the streets, and in recent years has turned her sights to conquering the backcountry. Jess ain’t here to pull punches, she’s ready to level the playing field- the CAPiTA Equalizer is a veritable wolf in wolfs clothing.

The bods at CAPiTA designed a special profile for the Equalizer, featuring an elongated rockered nose, blending into a cambered mid-section with a flat kick tail. The result is a powerhouse snowboard, with a Muhammad Ali ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’ mantra.

“The result is a powerhouse snowboard, with a Muhammad Ali ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’ mantra”

As Jess set her sights on taming the endless backcountry her needs in her snowboard changed, she swapped out gap to rail for fall line forays and backcountry booters. The tech packed into the Equalizer pays testament to her move towards fast and light, precision snowboarding. The lightweight poplar/paulownia core is overlaid with both triax and biax glass for ultimate strength to weight properties.

The inserts are set back half an inch down the board to maximise the float in the nose, with the tail blunted off to create disparate surface area forcing the tail to sink and the nose to lift when weighted. The camber runs further into the tail to create a hotspot of power to drive through turns and slashes with the back leg. The Equalizer is ideal for narrow chutes, surfing open bowls, charging tracked out fields and zipping through tree runs, the ideal mix of power and precision.

“Packed to the nips with the best of CAPiTA’s space age tech, The Equalizer utilises an ultra-high-density Quantum Drive sintered base, HOLYSHEET fibreglass overlays, and Aramid and flax fibres”

While The Equalizer may have made a home for itself in the steep and deep, it’s more than capable of tackling all sorts of terrain, be it soft and fluffy or hardpack and sheet ice. Packed to the nips with the best of CAPiTA’s space age tech, The Equalizer utilises an ultra-high-density Quantum Drive sintered base, HOLYSHEET fibreglass overlays, and Aramid and flax fibres running the length of the board for increased response and shock absorption. The fibres work together to soak up the chatter and dampen the ride while you’re charging through the chop and chunder and the Blended Radial Sidecut holds your line and really lets you dial into your carves without skidding out.

Less confident riders or those looking for a playful, all-mountain deck would do better to look towards the CAPiTA Paradise, but for those who are raring to break down barriers, smashing glass ceilings and drop kick anyone who stands in her way the Equalizer is ready to bulldoze through any obstacle.

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

“This. Board. Is. Rad. Honestly, I felt like a badass riding it which if you knew me you’d know that I definitely am not. I don’t know if I was simply having a great day, or if it was the board that brought out the confidence in me but I literally felt like I could do anything and everything while I was on it.

“This. Board. Is. Rad.”

It was snowing quite heavily while I was riding the Equalizer, so I got to try it in both powder and on the piste. It worked brilliantly for both. The board isn’t too stiff but neither is it too soft. It’s ideal for charging and it also holds an edge, so carving comes quite naturally (whether you aim for it or not). Any odd jump I managed to pop with this board also felt stable, both while in the air and when landing. The stability and pop of The Equalizer made me feel super secure, and also made me more committed to whatever I wanted to try while riding it. This is a great all mountain board, one that doesn’t feel like it’s been specifically designed for any one type of riding (it’s good for everything).

Not sure if my stoke for this board has grown over time, as things tend to do, but everything about this board felt just right. Santa, if you’re reading this, I’d very much love to have the Capita Equalizer under my tree come Christmas time. Please. Thanks. Cheers. Bye.”
