Oldheads in the scene will know the Burton Fish from its years of service as one of the most prominent powder specific snowboards on the market, and last season Burton decided to give ol’ faithful the once over to create a truly remarkable, new modern classic.

This is the kind of snowboard we like to refer to as a ‘reverse mullet’, it’s all business down the back end, this is where you’re throwing those huge slashes, driving through turns and controlling the whole snowboard, and up front? A pure powder party.

Who Is The Burton Fish 3D For?

There’s a certain nostalgia factor to be found here, so chances are you’re an old timer reliving the glory days, or you’re a young gun who wishes you were around to experience them. Either way, you’re not looking for an all-rounder here- you’re an out and out powder hound who froths over deep snow and dreams of putting down surfy turns. Let’s be real, you’re either not interested in riding park, or you’ve got a separate deck for the days you’re hitting the kicker line.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

When it comes to floating in powder, there are many ways to skin the cat, and the Fish 3D utilises them all. Its whopping 30mm taper, voluptuous waist width, elongated nose and 3D shaping all work in synchrony to ensure this is one snowboard that’ll float like an absolute champ.

Obviously, the Fish 3D is directional, but the tip and tail shape themselves take it several steps further. The prominent scoops in the nose start to really increase at the contact points until you’re left with a huge spoon up front to allow snow to flow out the sides to keep it floating easily. Whilst in the tail, the convex shape creates a channel for snow and air to flow through and the dual swallow tail reduces surface area allowing the back end to sink down.

Construction and Materials

45° Carbon Highlights sit underneath the core to bolster torsional response, so while the Fish 3D is flat underfoot, there’s still some dynamic energy to be had driving power to your edges. With its triax fibreglass weave and WFO Sintered base, the Fish 3D can be pretty quick and mean, not in the same way as something like the Custom X, but it can still get up and go pretty sharpish.

The wood in the core is positioned in such a way as to add strength through the toe and heel side for better grip through slightly sketchy conditions, although it doesn’t use Burton’s signature Frostbite technology, but let’s be honest this isn’t a snowboard to be riding when the snow isn’t plentiful.

Roundup

The Burton Fish is a classic, the Fish 3D is the evolution of that archetype; the next step in the journey to create the world’s best powder snowboard. It doesn’t claim to do everything, it’s definitely more of a quiver board for those days it’s been puking non-stop but boy when it has been, you’d be hard pressed to not have a hell of a time on it.
