Burton Barracuda 2015-2016 Snowboard Review

Powder predator

The Details:

Now its its fifth year, the Burton Barracuda has become widely recognised as a top choice for all-mountain riding. The profile has been tweaked for 2015/16, with the new ‘Directional Flying V’ offering a longer rocker section from the nose to the waist, and a more pronounced camber bend towards the tail.

Naturally this makes it very directional, a trait enhanced by the slightly tapered shape. When ridden in your normal stance, the Barracuda will stay on top of the powder while giving you plenty of power for popping. This makes it ideal for the rider who likes to point it down pillow lines and send it off spines.

When it’s not a powder day, the Barracuda still has a lot to offer. The Frostbite edges – with sections that slightly protrude out from under the bindings – come into their own in icy conditions, plus the medium flex and light weight allow you to play about on the piste.

Also, Burton reckons you can ride this slightly shorter than your normal board, leaving you with a more maneuverable stick that will still float effortlessly in powder.

If the backcountry’s your focus but not the be-all-and-end-all of your riding plans, this could be the one.

Ed Blomfield – Whitelines

“This is a cruiser of a board, great for wide open turns and a very stable platform at speed, but not really something you throw about. In skateboarding terms, it’s almost like a longboard, for with its newly carbon-stiffened core the 2015/16 Barracuda simply glides down the piste.

Where it really excels, however, is in the deep stuff. That short tail sinks easily and the nose mellows out any unexpected lumps and bumps, which would make it an ideal choice for the powder newbie – no more going arse over tit on a twin tip!

Not everyone wants to hit the park all day, but equally not everyone needs a full-on quiver board that’s only good for heli drops and Japan. This board fills that gap; it will eat up the miles whatever conditions Mother Nature throws at you.”
