Both the U88 Jacket and the U66 bib pants are made of a 2-Layer face fabric that’s 54 percent biosourced polyester 46 percent recycled polyester. The conventional polyester used in the manufacture of snowboard jackets consists of 30 percent mono-ethylene-glycol, and 70 percent terephthalic acid, both petro-chemical compounds derived from fossil fuels. The biosourced polyester used by Picture is derived, in part, from sugar cane waste, which helps reduce the material’s impact on the planet.

The fabric has waterproof and breathability ratings of 20,000 / 20,000—more than high enough for most freeriders in most conditions, and easily enough for anyone who spends their time bombing round resorts. The U88 jacket features a layer of the brand’s own Coremax insulation, which at 230g/m2 provides plenty of warmth—a factor our tester came to appreciate sitting on old, slow chairlifts in the smaller resorts of the Italian Dolomites.

Fit and Features

The pants have thigh zips for insulation, and a truck load of pockets, including front pockets with a snap down flap over the zip. There are gaiters with lace loops to keep the snow out of your socks if you’re bootpacking in powder, and the seams and zips on both the jacket and pants are fully taped, for extra waterproofing.

This is a jacket and pants combo that sits in the sweet spot between backcountry capability and on-piste credibility. The look and feel are pure snowboarding, with the full bib and block colouring on the pants echoing classic American workwear brands like Carhartt or Dickies. This is combined with high tech waterproof and breathability ratings that allow this to handle almost any condition you’ll encounter on the mountain—including heavy blizzards.

Dedicated splitboarders might baulk at the added weight and bulk of the insulation. The jacket weighs 1.4kg and the pants are just over 1kg, so neither are the lightest, and if you’re on a lengthy backcountry mission, you’ll probably want something that packs a bit smaller for the skin track up. But if you’re mostly riding off the lifts, this is a great combination, at a very reasonable price—especially considering the efforts that Picture have made to minimise its impact on the planet.

Pros:

• A brilliant jacket and pants combo that covers a lot of bases and will work for almost any on-hill situation, while also looking good at après. It’s also a bargain, given the tech and features on offer

Cons:

• It’s not the lightest combo in the world, so if you’re a splitboarder or planning on spending a lot of time bootpacking, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere
