Why we chose the Jones Shralpinist Snowboard Outerwear: An exciting newcomer, or an ol’ faithful? This outfit is a bit of both, and all the better for it.

After crushing the snowboard game for years and successfully jostling its way into the binding market, Jones now has its sights set on outerwear. The entire inaugural collection is technical as hell, but the Jones Shralpinist jacket and pants stand out even in that formidable field. When Jeremy Jones undertakes yet another bonkers mission to one of Mother Nature’s least-hospitable locations, this is what he’ll be donning.

Who Are The Jones Shralpinist For?

Honestly, we don’t love the name, but it does help to clarify the target audience: shredder + alpinist = shralpinist, apparently. So if you know your way around a skin track or a set of crampons, but are just as interested in pushing your limits on the way down, this clobber’s for you.

Materials and Construction

The headline here is Gore-Tex Pro, that miracle material that keeps even the nastiest storms at bay. Granted, it does mean that the Shralpinist jacket and pants are the only items in the Jones line to use ecologically-sketchy fluorochemicals to achieve impressive water-resistance levels, but it claws back plenty of planet-points when you consider how long it’ll be before you need to buy replacements. Also, recycled materials have been used wherever possible, and everything is certified by at least one of the world’s leading supply-chain watchdogs.

Jones’ clever-clever move with the Shralpinist is to use different versions of Gore-Tex Pro in key areas in order to maximise comfort. The areas of the jacket and pants that put in the hard yards – specifically the hood, arms, knees and bum – feature more durable fabric, while the torso and inside legs are optimised for breathability. An inspired approach to outerwear construction, and one that’s backed by a lifetime guarantee.

Fit and Features

Fit-wise, it’s your classic serious-freerider look; all substance over style, with every consideration taken for comfort on the way up as well as the way down. Having said that, we reckon it looks the business too, with all-black options available should you not wish to commit to the full ‘safety red’ matching gear.

It’s amazing what a difference having a freeride-specific jacket and pants can make when the getting’s good. Thanks to the powder skirt and gaiters, adjustable hood, waterproof zips and bountiful venting, you’ll be as snug as a bug from your first ascent to your last face-shot.

Safety is naturally a top concern of the Jones team, and that’s why every piece of outerwear is equipped with the Recco avalanche beacon system. Some tips on conducting an avalanche rescue are also printed inside the jacket.

Not every day is a powder day, of course, which is why there are also specific pockets for your liftpass and phone.

Roundup

A barnstorming debut, then, and one that looks set to improve the lot of (if we must) “shralpinists” the world over. As far as technical adventure-primed outerwear goes, this pairing is essentially unimprovable.

High-end gear naturally requires a substantial investment, and the existence of so many established outerwear specialists might make you hesitate going with a freshman-year offering such as this. However, the Jones brand is synonymous with quality in other sectors, so you’d be a fool to expect anything less here.
