Burton Photon Step On 2017-2018 Snowboard Boots Review

The Burton Photon Step On snowboard boot is one of two models in the men’s range that are compatible with the new Burton Step On bindings. The Ruler would suit less aggressive riders better, but the balls-out brigade should opt for this one.

Sceptics may question the Step On system’s suitability for hard charging, but after extensive testing – using this very boot, in fact – we can confirm that there’s no issue there.

“Both Boa coilers use ‘New England Ropes’ rather than standard wires, which come with a lifetime warranty”

The Photon Step On is secured using two Boa coilers, but not in the way that most other boots use them. The front-and-centre one tightens the boot as normal, but the other controls the material across the front of the boot.

This works to mimic the feeling and support of a traditional binding strap, albeit one that’s seamlessly blended with the contours of the boot. The result is fine-tuned support from first run to last – and both coilers use ‘New England Ropes’ rather than standard wires, which come with a lifetime warranty.

If you’re going to really push your riding, then a boot needs to be comfortable as well as sturdy. The Burton Photon Step On is no slouch in that department either, with the high-tech ‘Imprint 3’ heat-mouldable liner. Moulded EVA footbeds keep your soles happy, whilst the anti-microbial properties of the lining stop them from stinking. The lace on the liner is easy to secure, while the sections at your shin have velcro fasteners to ensure that nothing slips out of place as the day goes on.

“From walking down stairs to bombing the hill, these feel just like regular snowboard boots”

There’s nothing to fault here, really; unlike some strapless bindings we’ve tried in the past, the Step On system’s various boot fixings do not interfere with the comfort in the slightest. From walking down stairs to bombing the hill, these feel just like regular snowboard boots.

Naturally you need to get yourself a pair of Burton Step On snowboard bindings too, as they won’t work with regular models. However, if you’re an early adopter who is keen to test the limits of the new tech, the Burton Photon Step On snowboard boot is waiting for you.

Trade Secrets

Max Zebe – Team Rider, Burton

These boots felt straight up comfy on my feet, and the Boa system works so easy and fast.

All in all, I can tell that through the Step Ons, snowboarding will be as fast and fun as never before.

I guess I will almost ride them all season from now on.
