Burton Ion 2018-2019 Snowboard Boots Review

Like a lion in Zion

The Whitelines 100 is the home of the newest, most exciting products on the market for 2018/19 – but it’s not only about the fresh stuff. We can’t overstate the importance of tried, tested gear, especially where boots are concerned, so this year we’re shining the spotlight on one of the most respected pairs in the business: the Burton Ion snowboard boots.

One of the longest-serving models of all time, the Burton Ion continues to be a stellar choice for the rider that likes a stiff, supportive flex that doesn’t skimp on comfort. Despite their relative rigidity, these are much lighter than you’d expect. They’re also built to last – which, for that price, is no less than you deserve.

“Thanks to the low-profile sole, these boots let you feel more connected to the board”

The liner works in two ways to keep your feet happy on the hill. Heat is retained by a carbon-enhanced fabric, keeping your toes toasty even on the coldest days. In warmer weather, sweat is directed away from your feet by moisture-wicking material. Combine these with some decent snowboard socks and you’re laughing.

Ultralon foam, held in high regard across the ski and snowboard boot industries, is there to give you the perfect liner fit – and if it’s been able to protect the shin bones of masochistic hard-booted two-plankers all these years, you know you can trust it.

The outer shell is naturally quite solid, in order for the Burton Ion to provide that extra level of support and response, but a section of softer material has been placed at the instep. When you crank down the ankle strap of your snowboard bindings, it helps to spread the pressure.

Thanks to the low-profile sole, these boots let you feel more connected to the board than chunkier versions. This principle can be taken too far, of course (who remembers bindings without baseplates? Shudder…) but Burton’s ability to pack maximum dampening into minimal material gives you great boardfeel without rattling your bones every time you hit uneven terrain.

There’s a version available with the Boa wire system, as well as a new Step On model, but for us it’s the classic Speed Lace Burton Ion snowboard boots that take the cake, and a spot in the Whitelines 100.
