Union Contact Pro 2019-2020 Snowboard Bindings Review

  • Sizes: S, M, L
  • Flex: 5
  • Entry System: Classic
  • Price: £195/€210

Gigi’s binder of choice, The Union Contact Pro is designed with fun in mind, the softer flex pattern keeps you feeling loosey goosey when you’re surfing the white wave.

Union claim that the mini disk only allows for 5% contact with your board, allowing the wood to flex more naturally, and giving you more feel underfoot. This is great for the jibbers and jivers out there, who want to be able to get that playful control and feel from their deck.

Comfort is key for riding and the Contact Pro’s foam baseplate acts as a dampener and absorbs some of the vibrations making for an oh so smooth ride. The ankle strap has also been also updated for your comfort and is designed to form around your boot without squashing your feet. Say bye-bye to uncomfortable pressure points and hot spots over the tops of your boots with the grippy and malleable toe straps, that are designed keep you locked in without becoming cumbersome.

Union are known for being tougher than most and certainly live up to their reputation with this binding. Aluminium heelcup and ratchets will stand the test of time, whilst keeping weight down.

Cut out Duraflex highbacks are flexy and playful and won’t stiffen up when the temperature drops, so you’ll have a more consistent ride. They’re mid-high so you’ll get a good amount of movement without sacrificing response.

Tester’s Verdict

Paul WoolProfessor

“Definitely a top choice medium flex binding. I rode a pair in 2017, so I was keen to get back on some new and improved Contact Pros. First of all the new models look great; the design, colourways and style are on point.

Coined as a freestyle binding, both the baseplate and highback are middle of the road flex, so it definitely has all mountain credentials. They are noticeably light in your hand and on the board. There is very-very little binding to board contact space giving a truer feel of the boards flex, but this doesn’t skimp of comfort, allowing a very responsive and precise ride without shaking your legs to bits. Really good dampening, the Contact Pro, like all Unions i’ve ridden, really absorbs vibrations and chatter well.

“Everything about the bindings feels premium and well made”

I’m a UK 11 and rode a pair of large, they fitted excellently. In terms of width, they’re really snug, no rattle or messed up strapping. The straps feel solid and durable, they’ve changed the Ankle strap thinning it down slightly without it feeling too flimsy.

I only got to ride these for 2 days, but I can say my own pair – which have had maybe 30-40days on snow – are still going strong. No bother with the ratchets, I fucking hate when ratchets get stuck or come loose – never had this with Unions.

Adjustability with the straps, plate and highbacks are all great – super easy. Everything about the bindings feels premium and well made. I think anyone could enjoy these but maybe they’re more suited to an intermediate to expert rider who likes a freestyle binding that has all mountain capabilities and a surfy fell. I love them, top marks.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

“If you want a light binding then this is a great option. You get great board feel through the soft EVA bushing underfoot, thanks to the use of a small-sized disk rather than a solid plastic tray.

The straps are comfy enough and the ratchets work well too. They come in a couple of colours including black, so it’s a pretty safe option.
If I were to ride a pair of Union bindings, the Contact Pro would be my choice.”
