Why we chose the Burton Step On X Men’s Snowboard Bindings: If there’s still a part of you that thinks step-in systems are for the inexperienced or just plain lazy, take that idea and put a big ‘X’ through it.

When Burton rehabilitated the step-in system a few years ago, it was no surprise to see most of the interest come from the beginner-to-intermediate end of the market. More advanced riders, many of whom still held onto the memories of the old ‘SI’ models, were understandably more sceptical. However, the existence of the X proves that this system isn’t just for newbies.

Who Is The Burton Step On X Men’s For?

Not your ‘classic’ step-in system customer, that’s for sure. The X is stiff and responsive, to the point that anyone new to the mountain will soon find they’ve bitten off more than they can chew, even allowing for the extra ease of entry. Instead, step forward – and, indeed, in – the more experienced snowboarders with a taste for speed, derring-do, and a splash of the unconventional.

Baseplate

The foundation of the Burton Step On X bindings is composed of a single piece, the absence of any joins or bolts offering a consistent amount of give throughout. It’s made of a hybrid material, a straight split between carbon and nylon. You’ll find the former in just about every high-end binding worth its salt, thanks to its naturally light and stiff nature. It does increase the cost, of course, but those who rely on the big C for their style of riding know it’s worth its weight in the diamonds that it could have been.

Comfort-wise, you’ve covered – or rather, the baseplate is. Every square centimetre is topped with soft EVA cushioning that’ll keep your feet happy from first chair to last. The whole thing is also backed by a lifetime warranty for additional peace of mind.

Straps and Highbacks

Straps, you ask? Pay attention at the back. Aside from a few tweaks here and there, the entry system for the latest batch of Step On X bindings is much the same as it’s always been. The click-clack of a compatible boot finding its fittings remains insanely satisfying, and feels secure even on teeth-chattering crud. Which is just as well, as the X expects you to spin it up to the highest speeds.

Helping you do that is the highback, which is made from the same carbon/nylon blend as the baseplate. In a word, responsive. The anchor point for your boot is subtle yet effective, and the release lever sits anonymously just above the heelcup. It’s a sleek design that speaks to its no-nonsense purposes, something the simple black & white colour scheme compliments nicely.

Roundup

If you’re still a Step On denier, then we’re not sure what more we can say to change your mind. After all, the Burton Step On bindings tick all the performance boxes you could want, and in its short lifespan the system has already proven itself to be effective and reliable. There are also plenty of great compatible boot options for the serious charger, with more being added all the time.

Still, we’re confident that for all the reasons above, plenty of seasoned riders will see the light. The X is here to stay, and we couldn’t be happier about that.
