Why we chose the Burton Hitchiker Splitboard Bindings: The engineering and reliability of a Spark R&D chassis with all the plush comfort and signature feel of a Burton binding.

Unsurprisingly, splitboarding had a bit of a golden year in 2021. More people than ever before made their way out on the skin track and sales in splitboard specific gear surged. So it comes as no surprise that when Burton and Spark R&D join forces to produce a splitboard binding it’s going to be pretty outstanding. The Burton Hitchhiker Splitboard bindings have been on the scene for several seasons already – but we believe they deserve all the attention they’ve garnered over the years, so we’re here to sing their praises once again.

Who Is The Burton Hitchiker For?

Well, splitboarders, obviously, but beyond that, the Hitchhikers suit a hugely broad spectrum of abilities and experience levels. There are lighter options out there. There are stiffer options too. Hell, there are even different interfaces from competitor brands. But in terms of a binding, that’s intuitive to use, incredibly durable and has all the comfort you’d come to expect from a solid binding option from the B, this thing is the ultimate box ticker.

Baseplate

Now, don’t get us wrong, we’re big fans of Burton’s design and construction throughout their range of hard and soft goods, but when it comes to a splitboard binding baseplate, we’re really only interested in looking at one brand – Spark R&D. Luckily for everyone, Burton have used their Tesla T1 system to form the chassis of the Hitchhikers.

The machined aluminium baseplate keeps the weight down, and the cable and pin free interface is incredibly simple and intuitive to use. For hike mode, they slide sideways into offset touring brackets and are locked into place with the snap ramp. When it comes to riding, just slide them over the pucks (sold separately) and lock the snap ramp in place once again.

The Hitchhikers also come equipped with the climbing wire, which allows you to adjust your climbing angles from stowed (0°), low (12°) and high (18°).

“Once again, that familiar Burton feeling will be noticed in the Double Take buckles which also give you a more secure fixing that takes only a handful of clicks to tighten sufficiently”

Straps and Highbacks

For the straps, riders will get that familiar comfort and response they’d come to expect from Burton with the Hammockstrap ankle straps and Supergrip Capstrap 2.0 toe straps. The ankle straps features a pretty minimal stitchless construction, with a nylon-reinforced cross-spine to dial-up response levels, while the toe cap has a rubber overmould to grip the toe box of your boots on both the climbs and descents.

Once again, that familiar Burton feeling will be noticed in the Double Take buckles which also give you a more secure fixing that takes only a handful of clicks to tighten sufficiently.

The highback is a bit of a departure from Burton’s solid binding options, but still a far cry from the superlight and minimal designs on the like of Spark R&D’s highbacks. It’ll provide a lot of connectivity and support to the back of the boot, but the two cut out channels shave a few extra grams and offer some more lateral flex for surfy turns in the backcountry.

There’s also a splitboard specific forward lean adjuster, with negative forward lean compatibility to allow you to really stretch your legs out on the skin track and cover ground that bit faster.

“All of the reliability and user-friendliness of the T1 Tesla system from Spark, with all of the comfort and fit around your boots that you’d come to expect from Burton”

Roundup

We’ve been big fans of the Hitchhikers for a few seasons now, and Burton seem to have created a split specific binding that really caters to the masses. All of the reliability and user-friendliness of the T1 Tesla system from Spark, with all of the comfort and fit around your boots that you’d come to expect from Burton. It’s a winning combination, and one that we haven’t seen replicated close to this well elsewhere in the market.
