Why We Chose The Eivy Ice Cold Base Layer: Straddling the line between fashion and function, Eivy’s base layers tick all our boxes.

For more than a decade, Swedish brand Eivy have been making a name for themselves creating a line of products that aren’t just fit for purpose, but fun and fashionable too. Their tagline ‘Unbored On Board’ describes their ethos pretty well, and you’ll find no shortage of funky patterns to play with here.

“While we love Eivy’s aesthetic, we also love their commitment to being as sustainable as possible”

Clothing is undoubtedly important in any scenario (unless you’re into that kind of thing), but base layers are one of the most important pieces of gear you’re going to have out in the mountains. Sure, you can wear a regular cotton t-shirt under your jacket, in the same way you can glue your Timberlands to an old skateboard deck to slide down the hill. It’ll kinda do the trick, but it’s not going to give the same performance, yaknow?

Who Is The Eivy Ice Cold For?

There’s no wrong answer, if they fit you and you like them, then they’re for you. Simple. Be it yoga on the beach, cold mid-winter jogging or warm spring days in the mountains snowboarding, they’re fit for purpose.

Materials and Construction

When we look at what materials are being used by Eivy in their base layers, we first need to look at the purpose of a base layer. They’re your body’s first line of defence against the elements, they’re you’re next to skin layer that aids in regulating your body’s temperature.

So, we need them to be breathable, moisture wicking and comfortable — and that’s why Eivy uses a fast drying, stretchy fabric (which also happens to be Global Recycled Standard). Eivy’s Okeo-Tex are constructed to feature a 4-way stretch with a brushed inside to keep it comfortable against your skin.

You’ll find flat lock seams to keep it from rubbing against you throughout the day, and if it gets hot enough to whip off the rest of your layers, you’ll benefit from the UPF 50+ sun resistant materials.

“Unlike a some brands, they haven’t just put out a unisex size range, but instead have listened and learned from their predominantly female customer base”

Fit and Features

One of the main benefits of the Eivy Baselayers is their fit. Unlike a some brands, they haven’t just put out a unisex size range, but instead have listened and learned from their predominantly female customer base. As such, the fit of the garments is more suited to women. You’ll see this in the longer cut at the back of the top, the higher waist in the leggings and the slightly shorter arm lengths.

Extra features include thumb loops to stop them riding up your arms (especially helpful if you’re multi-layering!!), a fleece lined collar in the top and woven patches in both pieces.

There’s also a hidden stash pocket in the waist of the leggings, which is the ideal size for a phone or for some other paraphernalia or contraband you’re looking to carry discreetly. We won’t tell if you don’t…

Roundup

While we love Eivy’s aesthetic, we also love their commitment to being as sustainable as possible. The water-free sublimation process they use for printing their garments contaminates zero water supplies and also produces zero waste for landfill as the paper leftovers from the process are recycled.

Eivy aren’t the only people to make base layers, but they’re some of the best, and certainly have been some of our favourites since the beginning. You’ll find a whole range of different patterns to choose from, we’re currently into the mix-and-match fashion, but you’re the master of your own destiny here. Happy shopping.

Pros:

  • Huge range of sizes and patterns to suit every person and style
  • They use performance fabric to ensure comfort

Cons:

  • They’re not the cheapest on the market

Tester’s Verdict

Stella Pentti – Whitelines

“Eivy was on my radar long before I got the chance to try out their stuff. The colourful, comfy looking kit caught my eye from the very start and once I finally got my hands on a pair of Ice Cold base layers I’m happy to say that there’s certainly more to them than just the eye-catching look.

The high-waisted tights are so, so, comfy. They’re light, they’re soft, they’re super stretchy, all the reasons why I use them for any occasion I can make an excuse to get away wearing a pair of leggings: yoga, travelling, lunch-time-strolls around the park, lounging in on the sofa… and of course snowboarding.

The top is great too, and the long collar really adds a nice layer of protection on the slopes – especially when it’s cold and windy. And, just like the leggings, I’ve found that it serves a purpose off the slopes too, especially for cold-weather morning runs.”
