36 litres is a lot of carry space, so the DaKine Poacher 36L snowboard backpack might be a bit too much bag for the average rider. However, if you’re all about exploring the backcountry, then sometimes only a larger pack will do.
“Even on a long hike with a board strapped to the bag, your shoulders won’t take too much of a beating”
Chucking everything into one compartment can be a nightmare, not to mention potentially dangerous. That’s why the DaKine Poacher 36L has a good showing of separate pockets, most notable a separate shovel/probe pocket that’s easy to access in a hurry.
You’ll also find a fleece-lined goggle pocket, and a water bottle pocket on the side. Then there’s the helmet carry system, which is easily stashable when you’re not using it. You’ll be glad it’s there on the ascent, though, especially if it’s warm.
As for the main compartment, you can access it via the back panel. If you want extra safety, a spine protector can be slipped into the pocket flap, but as for comfort you’re already well covered by the DaKine Poacher’s padding. Even on a long hike with a board strapped to the bag (via the handy vertical carry system), your shoulders won’t take too much of a beating.
The DaKine Poacher is also available in the R.A.S. version, which can accommodate a removable Mammut airbag system, and there are 26L and 14L sizes available too.
