Burton Day Hiker 31L 2018-2019 Snowboard Backpack Review

Don't panic.

Burton’s Day Hiker collection is pretty comprehensive; as well as different sizes, there are also women’s- and kid-specific versions. This one is the largest of the lot: the Burton Day Hiker 31L snowboard backpack.

This will best suit the riders who like to have plenty of kit with them on the mountain. Naturally this will include those wanting to venture into the backcountry, and they should find exactly what they’re looking for here (it’s not called the Day Hiker for nothing).

The external straps let you carry your board on your back as you break the trail, and the grippy rubber sections keep it in place with every step. If you’ve packed a lot of heavy stuff, the comfy shoulder straps are a godsend, as are the padded hip strap and sternum strap.

Water bottle pockets on both sides are easy to access for a quick drink, or if you prefer to use a hydration system then there’s a sleeve for that (which doubles as a laptop sleeve off the hill).

Like all good larger packs there’s an access panel on the back, so you can get those hard-to-reach items without having to tip everything out. When you’re finally ready to let rip, the tapered shape means that you get a good fit against your back all the way down, and not too much unwieldy bulk at the lower end.

While it’s obviously well kitted out for the powder, the aesthetics mean that it won’t look out of place on a plane, in the classroom or down the pub. Again, it’s a bit on the larger size, but thanks to packs like these you don’t have to look like a Polar explorer every time you want to haul a decent amount of stuff.

The ‘Shade Heather’ colourway seen here features Bluesign-approved material, and there are two others to choose from. There’s also the aforementioned range of smaller sizes (25-litre and 28-litre), but thanks to that extra space and back panel access our favourite has to be the Burton Day Hiker 31L snowboard backpack.
