Mons Royale Pro Lite Tech 2018-2019 Snowboard Socks Review

Pro Tech yo'self

Snowboarding is all about building on a solid foundation. Get a decent ollie before you try spinning, leave the Eurocarves until you’ve mastered the regular kind, and only partake of the apres bar’s signature flaming Chartreuse cocktail once you’ve had a demi or two. Similarly, don’t go buying the fanciest boots in the world if you’re still using your old school football socks.

The humble sock plays a hugely important role in your day of shred. Get it wrong and you’ll have feet that are either cold, cooking, or clammy – affecting your performance, and most likely cutting your day short too. The best way to avoid foot stress is to invest in a quality pair of socks from the merino experts at Kiwi brand Mons Royale.

“Less is more for the Mons Royale Pro Lite Tech socks; the minimalist design is big on comfort”

Less is more for the Mons Royale Pro Lite Tech snowboard socks; the minimalist design is big on comfort, and built specifically for the mountain. Thanks to a liberal use of the miracle wool (these are roughly two parts merino to one part nylon), they punch well above their weight in the performance stakes.

Merino is naturally well-suited to use in socks, thanks to unrivalled moisture-wicking qualities. If your feet start to sweat, the Mons Royale Pro Lite Tech socks can keep your skin feeling fresh. It’s also comfy as hell.

The toe box has no ridge where it joins the rest of the sock, and there’s a bit of extra cushioning at the shin. Granted, that’s something that will be more of interest to our two-planked associates, but if you have fairly stiff boots then it’s still a welcome feature.

Nothing comes close to being as renewable as wool; just ask any sheep shearer. It’s therefore better for the environment than the synthetic alternatives – especially when you look at the stringent animal welfare regulations on the welfare of the sheep that Mons Royale uses.

The Mons Royale Pro Lite Tech socks may not be cheap, but for that price we’d rather have one pair of these than three lower-quality pairs. Models with more cushioning are available, but these are a perfect lightweight option.

Trade Secrets

Ed Leigh – Team Rider, Mons Royale

“Merino wool is nature’s miracle fabric; it’s softer, warmer (even when wet) and way more breathable than synthetic alternatives.

The crimper of the fibres also means it won’t trap bacteria, so it just doesn’t ever smell. OK, you can make it smell, but it won’t hold that old sweat smell like Polyprop socks and thermals, and you can just air it rather than wash it to get rid of the stink.

So bearing in mind all of the above, you can see why it would make the dream sock fabric, right? Well there was always one hitch: durability. Merino has traditionally been too fragile to deal with the wear and tear a snow sock goes through, but over the course of the last ten years Mons has cracked the Matrix and created a durable merino sock.

I have pairs that have done well over 100 days now, and they are still going strong… and no, they don’t smell.”
