Iouri ‘iPod’ Podlatchikov took advantage of a Shaun White-less field on Saturday to turn in a stellar performance and claim himself the first ever World Snowboarding Championships Halfpipe title. In the women’s category, Kelly Clark extended her incredible run of contest victories, taking her to something ridiculous like 15 straight wins in the last 15 contests she’s entered.

iPod’s run included the double McTwist 1260, a move that only he and Shaun have ever put down, as well as two other double cork variations. There was a surprise second place finisher in American Matt Ladley, who hasn’t showed up many international podiums before – at least not in this kind of stratospheric company – while the familiar face of Louie Vito took third, with a run that included four doubles – and nothing else!

The women’s contest was always Kelly’s to lose really, as she’s literally head and shoulders above most of the rest of the field when it comes to amplitude. Queralt Castellet of Spain became only the second woman ever to land a 1080 in competition with a run that included several monster spins (though very few grabs!) and earned her second, while Gretchen Bleiler took third. As with the men’s contest though, the absence of the Olympic gold medallist from the starting line-up is felt when the champs are announced. Would Torah or Shaun have beaten this field? You can’t be sure, but you’d be a fool to bet against either of them…
