Red Bull Recharged Winner Announced

The rider driven bonanza in Mammoth has come to an end

Red Bull Recharged looked crazy as shit. A mash up of halfpipe, slopestyle and transition riding, it brought together some of the world’s best riders to duke it out on the custom build course.

The brainchild of halfpipe don Ben Ferguson and slopestyle wunderkind Mark McMorris RBR has been 2 years in the making. From early designs made from clay, to composite sketches, to eventually getting the course built by the shapers up at Mammoth. The beauty of running their own event was that the riders could shred the course and offer constant feedback on what they thought might need tweaking or changing, and the shapers could jump in the CAT and adjust the course.

The teams were stacked with shit hot riders, each with their own strengths and style of riding. When you get this many insane riders together it becomes a melting pot of creativity and energy that translates to some of the sickest riding we’ve seen in a while. The riders all seemed to enjoy the more casual nature of the event, after travelling all winter competing, being at a low-stakes affair must be a pretty fun way to cap off your season.

The jam format of the event encouraged style and creativity rather than precision and perfection. The riders were egging each other on to try things they wouldn’t necessarily be cracking out in a more traditional comp. The end goal was to create an edit made up of 10 clips they stacked over the week with Travis Rice judging which team came out on top.

Team B-Ferg came out swinging and walked away with the W, with Luke Winkelmann collecting the Individual Charger award. All 3 teams stacked some unreal footy and it pays testament to the merits of a contest like this.

Is this new wave of contests the way forward? Are we moving away from the traditional spin to win format into the realm of rider driven events? In the same vein as Audi Nines and Peace Park, the riders seem to enjoy having a bit more control and thus far have still blown minds with the results.
