Prior to the start of the Dew Tour, it wasn’t clear if Shaun White was even going to compete – but after topping the qualifying on Thursday, he delivered once again in the final to take his first major title since before the Sochi Olympics.
His first run had all the usual beats – massive backside air, double McTwist 1260, frontside 540 stalefish – and was as clean as anyone could have expected in a slow, snowy pipe. Once he was at the bottom, it was clear that this would be the run to beat. Ayumu Hirano and Iouri Podlatchikov certainly gave it a shot, but neither were able to improve on Shaun’s score of 92.6.
Reigning champion Taylor Gold was only a fraction of a point away from the podium, and on another day could have been up there once again, but for him – and all of us – the lesson from Shaun was clear: write him off at your peril.
