It was proposed this time last year, and now it’s official: Big Air is coming to the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The dust had not long settled on Sochi 2014 – where the newly-introduced slopestyle discipline garnered massive TV numbers – before tongues started wagging about Big Air. The inclusion’s a no-brainer, really; big stunts equals big audiences. Strangely, the equivalent skiing event didn’t get approved – too close to aerials, perhaps?
Team GB’s Billy Morgan and Katie Ormerod will be among those refining their preparations for Pyeongchang
There’ll be both men’s and women’s medals up for grabs, which means that Team GB’s Billy Morgan and Katie Ormerod will be among those refining their preparations for Pyeongchang. With snowboarding now in the quad age and three years still to go before the games, we can only guess at how big the kicker is going to be. In any case, it’s possible that we’ll once againlive in a world where the tricks landed in the Big Air aren’t the same as what gets put down in slopestyle.
Of course, the conversation about whether or not snowboarding should even be at the five rings in the first place will continue. Maybe the US Department Of Justice, fresh from tearing apart FIFA, will re-open the books on the IOC’s decision to hand Olympic snowboarding to FIS…?
