Shaun White wins Dew Tour Skateboarding Vert in Salt Lake City

Having narrowly missed out on a gold medal in the skateboard vert at the Xgames earlier this summer, Shaun White arrived at the Dew Tour Toyota Challenge in Salt Lake City as a man on a mission. White, it seems, is determined to make the crossover from most successful snowboarder in the world to most successful skateboarder, and the fact that he is still to win over many in the core skateboard fraternity, who don’t regard him as one of them, only adds motivation to his stubborn and competitive attitude. Hot off the heels of a Dew Tour win in Portland, he once again let his skating do the talking at the Toyota Challenge in SLC, destroying the field with a mixture of progressive tricks and huge airtime. Watching the video above, it’s really apparent just how much bigger Shaun goes than his competitors – with the possible exception of Sandro Dias and Pierre-Luc Gagnon (who bagged second). In blowing away the competition like this, Shaun White is also blowing away the cobwebs on a discipline of skateboarding that has been dominated by old timers for over a decade. OK, it’ll all end in another American Express advert and yet more lucrative endoresements, but surely this can only be a good thing for the future of vert skateboarding as a whole? And it’s nice to see that, famous as he is these days, Shaun still remembered to put his Whitelines t-shirt on before the final ;)
