YES The Greats 2015-2016 Snowboard Review

Salute the legends

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 YES Greats here

Once again YES’ three amigos – Romain De Marchi, DCP and JP Solberg – have selected bona fide snowboard legends to grace the topsheets of the different lengths in the Greats series. Peter-John de Villiers has crafted four striking black-and-white graphics for this year’s YES The Greats; one each for Jon Cardiel, Noah Salasnek, Todd Richards and Shaun Palmer.

Looking beyond aesthetics, it’s a twin-shaped asymmetrical freestyle board that’s the stick of choice for JP himself. The asym element has been slightly tweaked this year, as has the shape of the nose and tail, but it’s still very much aimed at the dedicated freestyle rider.

The ‘Camrock’ profile involves a subtle camber section in the middle of the board, but with rocker at each end, so it’ll hold an edge at speed whilst delivering better pressability and powder performance than classic camber.

It’s stiff enough to take to bigger features without a worry, and there’s some bamboo stringers that run from end to end to provide extra strength and pop.

That’s not to say it can’t deliver when you’re cruising piste, buttering or hitting rails, but the YES Greats is definitely in its element when pushed by a confident rider.

TESTER’S VERDICT:
Mike Brindley – Whitelines

“I’ve been riding the old YES Great Beauties for a few years now, and this year’s equivalent, The Greats, was right up my street.

It’s been redesigned for this season with a new shape and new materials, and the overall feel is of a board that is at home pretty much everywhere.

It charged the piste with quick edge-to-edge, got plenty of snap off kickers with a predictable, progression-friendly run-in, and – with a bit of rider commitment – was even capable of buttering.

The extra pop and faster transition time between turns were the most notable changes compared to its predecessor, but it certainly seems to have retained the quiver killing capabilities along the way.”
