Like any backcountry backpack worth its salt, the Osprey Kresta 30 has everything you need and nothing you don’t. The two-strap snowboard carry system isn’t exactly unique (if it ain’t broke…) but the rest of this pack’s straps – padded for your body, and compression for keeping the pack low-profile – ensure that you can do plenty of trail-breaking before any discomfort sets in. The frame, strap contours and overall length have also taken common differences between male and female body shapes into account.
The front pocket makes it easy to keep your avalanche gear organised; bespoke compartments for your probe, shovel handle and blade save room in your bag and, crucially, makes it easier to access your gear quickly in an emergency. You can also fit your splitboard skins in there, so you can keep the main storage section dry on the descents.
Speaking of which, there’s enough room in there for whatever extra layers, food, action cameras and whatnot that you need for a full day out of bounds. It’s also got an insulated sleeve for a hydration pouch built into the back panel pocket, and the tube can be fed into a zippered channel in the right shoulder strap.
Every clip and zipper is mitt-friendly, from the waist strap’s two roomy stash pockets to the scratch-preventing goggle pocket that saves you having to faff around with a separate goggle bag. It’s all topped off by a simple but effective helmet carry system that secures your lid for the ascent, and an eco-friendly water-repellant treatment.
